On Wednesday, October 24th the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) is scheduled to conduct an oil & gas lease auction where the mineral rights of up to 125,000 acres of state owned land will be leased off for oil and gas development. These auctions allow Michigan’s parks and public land to be susceptible the harmful effects of various extraction methods such as hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”.

Citizens Against Drilling On Public Land (CADPL) is a newly founded organization dedicated to ending MDNR oil & gas lease auctions. We believe that through a network of oppositional power we can send a powerful message that our public parks, public land, and state forests should be protected, not exploited.

I am concerned about the short term thinking by the State and putting financial gains ahead of conservation of our lands.

I find it strange that the DNR does not want people to ride horses on State land because the horses might damage the trails, but they will lease the land to the oil companies to frack for gas and oil. I would think that the small amount of of organic fertilizer a horse would leave is

not going to be a danger to land, water or air quality like the chemicals fracking uses. The horse's hooves will not tear up the land nearly as much as the big trucks and heavy equiptment of the oil companies. I wish the DNR would think about the impact their leasing has on our beautiful Michigan.

To keep our public lands pristine and in particular to protect our water from contamination.
