Relaxation and play are extremely important for the health of every human being. At the moment health care costs are sky rocketing and this is a heavy burden on employers large and small.
Health care costs are high because our workers are in frequent need of health care. If measures could be taken to reduce our workers need for health care then that would reduce costs and ease the burden on both employers and taxpayers.
The cause of almost all lapses in health are a result of the human body and mind being over-stressed. It makes sense then to give incentive to employers to create working conditions which reduce stress.
The biggest cause of stress in the American workday is the lack of a recess period where one can fully relax their mind and exercise their body. The current lunch break standards are inadequate to benefit the health of our workers because they discourage play and are often too short to significantly reduce the stress of a worker.
An extended recess period where a worker can fully relax and engage in play is the only form of break that will impart any real health and productivity benefits.
This type of recess is given to students up till even graduate level curriculums, and it is highly beneficial to their productivity and well-being. Why is it that upon entering the work world, this all-important time is taken from us?
It is not an accident that at some of the nation's leading companies such as Apple, Google and Facebook, recess is given to employees, and they are encouraged to play and relax when needed. Their health care costs are dramatically lower as a result, and the productivity of their employees is much higher.
The benefits of daily relaxation and play extend beyond lower health care costs they also include:
- Improved attitude and morale
- Stronger social bonds
- Greater productivity in the afternoon
- Greater productivity late in the work week
- Greater creativity in problem solving
- Decreased need to indulge in unhealthy habits outside of work
- Economic stimulation to create goods and services to meet the needs of people with this new time
With all of these benefits, there is no doubt that any company that adopts a policy allowing an extended mid-day recess will see costs drop and profits rise.
We petition then, that incentive be given to corporations who are reluctant to adopt this type of break because they fear an immediate dip in profits, with the understanding that within a short period of time company costs will drop even without the continuation of this incentive and their profits will be higher as a result.
