Stop Illegal Shark Fishing in Cyprus NOW!

    1. Petition by

      Nireas Marine Research

Shark fishing in Cyprus has been evident for the past 5 years. Fishers are slaughtering protected species of sharks in our waters, sacrificing these magnificent high predators for the sake of tourist activities. Shark fishing trips are organised throughout the island, and are promoted publicly through the internet. This activity is not regulated by the authorities, who fail to impose any set of regulations or enforce legislation.
KILLING SHARKS IS NOT A SPORT!
We demand the immediate and effective banning of shark fishing, and the enforcement of penalties to the companies that are engaged in this action.

To have a thorough understanding, be sure to run through this slowly -- many countries' leaders, agencies, bodies, authorities and/or representatives have succeeded or are working toward closing loopholes by enacting, redefining or creating legislation(s), and/or are working toward curtailing and/or ending the fishing/finning of protected sharks (and other marine species), as well as adapting/adopting measures toward the sustainability of non-protected sharks; some areas having non-protected sharks in a situation otherwise and ordinarily found at appendices of CITES, CMS, IUCN and etc., and some areas finding that out the hard way resulting more hardship both ecologically then economically, and others lucky to be spared such hardship by the interventions of NGO's such as Nireas Marine Research, where leadership and representatives are either not as intellectual, or otherwise inept, or are corrupt, or simply just too slow... One or more of these descriptions befits the DFMR thus the need for this petition. The era 1950 - 2000 has impacted immensely on not only Elasmobranchs, but the food web for ecological groups throughout the marine realm and so, we just can't keep fishing like we used to. Some of these fishing charters could easily adapt scuba and/or other marine-ecotourism charters with minimal business/cost interruptions. I understand Nireas Marine Research has worked tirelessly for a prolonged length of time seeking correct scientific research be considered along with investigative processes and more-over, legislation(s) be sought and adopted to reduce risk of any further hardship that the DMFR and Republic of Cyprus may-well incur and then endure -- To have a thorough understanding, be sure to run through this slowly no more, for where the rest of the world has evolved -- try to keep up.

It's just pure greed, it's cruel and there's no need to kill these beautiful creatures for the filthy greed of some humans...they're no human when they do something like this!
