The crisis in Congo has killed over 5 million people. And a year after major fighting in Goma, east Congo, hit the headlines, the situation in the country has only gotten worse.

Watch the video and pledge:

if you pledge this means you support the Oxfam petition which will be delivered to the UN Security Council on Tuesday November 24th calling on the UN Security Council to:

"work with the government of Congo to pursue a political as well as a military solution and to ensure that the Congolese national army are disciplined, accountable and complying with their obligation to protect civilians."

About the Situation in Congo:
Congolese military - with the support of the UN - have been sent in to the east, with the goal to disarm the rebel militia by force. It is important that they be disarmed but the strategy is doing more harm than good. The rebels are increasing attacks on civilians, but so are the poorly disciplined Congolese army who are looting villages and raping women.

For every rebel combatant disarmed:
- 1 Congolese civilian has been killed
- 7 women and girls raped
- 6 houses burned and destroyed
- 1,000 people forced to flee their homes.

What we want to achieve:
We want the international community to stop backing a strategy which is devastating ordinary people's lives. This petition demands that the UN work with the government of Congo to pursue a political as well as a military solution and to ensure that the Congolese national army are disciplined, accountable and complying with their obligation to protect civilians.

Your support is greatly appreciated. in addition to taking the pledge ConflictVoice urges you to:
- blog about the Congo
- tweet Congo,
- tell your friends on facebook about the petition
