Victory

VICTORY!

The Egyptian Supreme Administrative Court issued a ruling that will enable Egyptians living abroad to vote in elections from the headquarters of accredited Egyptian diplomatic missions in the countries in which they live.

The court also declared that the government must establish polling stations in all Egyptian consulates around the world.

This victory follows an international outcry by Egyptians living abroad who filed a case against the chairman of the High Elections Committee (HEC), the head of Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), the prime minister and the minister of interior.

In addition to starting a petition on Change.org, expatriates all around the world protested outside Egyptian embassies and consulates to demand the right to vote.

Dear fellow Egyptians,

Egypt’s transitional government had recently promised officially to honor the constitutionally-guaranteed right to vote to Egyptian citizens who will be abroad during the time of the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections. More recently, there have been concerning rumors about revoking this promise, which were subsequently negated  by the supreme military council. However, we are yet to see decisive and transparent steps to ensure this promise.

Therefore, this letter (read the letter below), addressed to Egypt’s Prime Minister, Dr. Essam Sharaf, will be delivered to him directly. It will also be hand-delivered in-person to Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nabil Elaraby, at a scheduled meeting late in the spring. The letter demands that the government take steps to ensure that Egyptians abroad be able to vote and that it facilitate reasonable methods and procedures for this.

If you feel strongly that the right to vote is an inalienable right of any citizen, please take a minute to sign and share with your friends and networks. We are striving to collect at least one million signatures to present compelling evidence that there are many Egyptians abroad who would exercise their right to vote when given the chance, and that many Egyptians living at home expect the electoral process to incorporate the voices of their compatriots abroad.

Long live Egypt!

Now that we have our revolution started we need to make sure that we all express fully our choices, wishes, hopes and dreams for our great Egypt. Let it never happen again that we, Egyptians, despair on ever being heard by our leaders.

All Egyptians must have equal rights and let's not forget why these Egyptians left Egypt in the first place.

      Egyptians abroad need to either:

      1. Have the capability of issuing National IDs in their country of residency at the the Egyptian Consulate (currently they do not have the equipment to issue IDs)

      Or

      2. Be allowed to vote using their passports.

If the Sudanese and Iraqis can vote abroad, it would be bitterly disappointing that the sons and daughters of Om el Donya cannot!

In civilized nations citizens who happened to be away from their homeland during an election can still fulfill their civic duty and responsibility by requesting absentee ballots and voting while being abroad. I join the voices demanding inclusion of all eligible Egyptian voters traveling or residing abroad through facilitating absentee secret ballots at embassies and consulates around the world.
