DC City Council and Mayor Vincent Gray: Open DC public outdoor pools at 10am this summer

DC has invested tens of millions of dollars building new - and renovating old - outdoor aquatic facilities. For hundreds of thousands full-time working parents, students and all others who want to visit a pool to cool down during hot summer weekends, the noon start time makes it difficult, if not impossible, for many to enjoy the facilities. Shade is limited at most all pools and opening just as the sun is at its peak makes it dangerous for the elderly, toddlers and anyone trying to avoid intense sun. By 1pm, the facilities become over-crowded, even dangerous, for younger kids.

Opening the facilities at 10am allows time to enjoy the pool before the noontime sun, it gives older citizens, younger children, parents and other early risers to use facilities before the crowds arrive. Finally, and maybe most importantly, it is a good way to spend a small portion of the budget surplus, giving taxpayers of DC the opportunity to use facilities built with tax revenue.

DC City Council, DC Parks and Rec, Mayor Vincent Gray

Open DC public outdoor pools at 10am this summer. Make the facilities available to parents of young children, students, elderly and anyone who wants to avoid the dangerous afternoon sun and large afternoon crowds.

Sincerely,

Earlier Pool Hours Under Consideration at Parks and Recreation

A petition that called for earlier pool opening times during the summer caught the attention of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) this week. DPR is holding internal meetings and having preliminary conversations about what it would take to meet the demands of a recent online petition "People are definitely taking it seriously and seeing if it can be done," John Stokes, a spokesman for DPR, told Patch.

Thanks to all who've signed so far. Keep spreading the word! I just wanted to pass along an email message I received from Charles Allen, Chief of Staff for Councilmember Wells, "Please know that Tommy is in full support of opening the outdoor pools at 10 am. There is a lot of demand for opening the pools earlier and supporting a variety of pool uses, rather than just open play. We will advocate for this change with DPR during the budget hearings coming up and ask that they make this change to support our families and pool users."

I live right next to Francis Pool and was so disappointed it does not open until 1 pm! I'd love to take my toddler there in the mornings before his afternoon preschool...

Community amenities, such as pools, libraries, and senior and recreational centers, should be open during the hours one might reasonably expect the public to use them.

Same as the DMV, Permit Centers, and the Fire and Police Departments.

These are all key government services, and thier users are all constituents.
