      USA Science & Engineering Festival

Support science and education today! Join Rep. Randy Hultren (R) and Rep. Joe Kennedy (D) in urging Congress to vote for H.Res. 276, which calls upon the U.S. House of Representatives to support the goals and ideals of National Science Week and the biennial USA Science & Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C.. The resolution also calls on State and local governments to recognize the last week in April, 2014 as a National Science Week.

Outreach and education are the sparks that create the flames of innovation and we need Congress to recognize this. Twenty years ago the US led the world in high school graduates and now we are a mere 20th. And out of the students who do graduate, only 30% are ready for college level science and 45% for the rigors of collegiate mathematics. This drop is having a noticeable effect as over ½ of all US patents are now awarded to non-US companies. There has also been a huge drop off in US researchers’ papers in the most influential journals. As a nation, we must regain our leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Our nation's future economy depends on it. Our nation's health and well-being requires it. Support H.Res. 276 today and show Congress that science, technology, engineering and mathematics matter!

The 2014 USA Science & Engineering Festival will have 750 of the World's leading professional scientific and engineering societies, universities, government agencies, high tech corporations and STEM outreach and community organizations. This is a free, non profit, purely educational, inspirational and family friendly event meant to excite, educate and celebrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The last Festival drew over 250,000 attendees and the 2014 Festival is expected to bring in nearly double that.

Please sign today to encourage Congress to recognize the importance of STEM education and to support the goals of the 2014 USA Science & Engineering Festival.

I am mechanical engineer and am currently working on my masters at the University of Cambridge in the UK. My dissertation is focusing on the way in which different countries are addressing the shortage of engineers through policy document recommendations focusing on pivoting the perception of engineers and engineering. I strongly believe in initiatives such as this to empower the leaders of tomorrow with the want and desire to be involved in STEM subjects and career paths.
