2011 is the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification as a country. The Congress needs to pass a concurrent House and Senate resolution acknowledging this most significant anniversary year of this great country.
Italy has been a good friend and close ally of the United States for more than 60 years. We have important air force and naval bases there. Italy has sent its military forces to Afghanistan at our request.
Italy and the U.S. share many important cultural values. Italy has been the leader for many centuries in the development of these values, including in the areas of literature, law, the visual arts, architecture, music and the sciences and has thus vastly contributed to our civilization;
This year is an excellent opportunity to acknowledge the debt we owe Italy, and the Congress of the United States is the proper body to do so.
