Honor Italy with a Resolution for the 150th anniversary of its birth.

    1. Petition by

      Joseph Grano

      Washington, DC, DC

2011 is the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification as a country. The Congress needs to pass a concurrent House and Senate resolution acknowledging this most significant anniversary year of this great country.

Italy has been a good friend and close ally of the United States for more than 60 years. We have important air force and naval bases there. Italy has sent its military forces to Afghanistan at our request.

Italy and the U.S. share many important cultural values. Italy has been the leader for many centuries in the development of these values, including in the areas of literature, law, the visual arts, architecture, music and the sciences and has thus vastly contributed to our civilization;

This year is an excellent opportunity to acknowledge the debt we owe Italy, and the Congress of the United States is the proper body to do so.

      Achievements and contributions of Italians have been greatly overlooked. The Senate passed a resolution honoring Slovenia on its 20 years of independence after just two days of negotiation.

      The 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy should be recognized as that great historical event inspired other nations and created the foundation for the Republic of Italy. Italy and the United States have a relationship that spans centuries, sharing common principles, historical ties, alliances and cultural relations. Italy has contributed to the world’s legacy of liberty, democracy and universal human rights.

      Important that we recognize by the Congress of the United States on such an anniversary. it has been done for many others on lesser occasions. Furthermore, there has been no closer collaborator with the United States than Italy.

      Constantino Brumidi was a great Italian-american who painted our Capitol. Shame on you for not recognizing the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification! Have we forgotten that Italy is a friend of the US??

      So much of the architecture in WDC goes back to classical Rome and Greece.
