Keep Condor in Weymouth

    1. Petition by

      Dorset Echo

Following the news that Condor Ferries is considering options for a new vessel and its future in Weymouth is uncertain, we call on the company to reconsider its plans and confirm its commitment to the town.
Weymouth enjoys a good relationship with the Channel Islands and the cross-Channel ferry link is a vital asset. The ferry operation is worth millions to the local economy and its impact is felt all over the borough.
Condor's absence for 17 months while the ferry berth was repaired by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council was a huge blow to the town and we do not want to see that happen again.

Weymouth is a lovely town, far prettier than Poole or Portsmouth. Weymouth is more convenient for access to the South West, for the Bristol area, for access to Dorset, Somerset, Gloucestershire. It would be a huge shame if Condor no longer operated to Weymouth anymore.

For residents of Weymouth and the surrounding area, Weymouth provides a shorter journey to the Channel Islands than does Poole or Portsmouth. Furthermore, there is access to St Malo in France via Jersey from Weymouth.

Also, as has been stated, the people using Condor Ferries need other services when using Weymouth, such as accommodation, restaurants, bars, shops, fuel........therefore the loss of Condor Ferries would have a detrimental effect on the suppliers of these services to tourists/travellers.

As an Englishman, but someone who is temporarily based in Guernsey, not having Weymouth as a point of access to England would be untenable : Weymouth provides a 3rd sea port of entry to the mainland U.K. for us Channel Island dwellers, and the loss of Weymouth would further isolate these remote islands. In my view, Condor would be foolish to axe Weymouth as a port of entry to England. Furthermore, Condor would be foolish to rely only upon 1 high speed vessel for access to the U.K. when they currently have 2. Putting all their 'eggs in one basket' with this new (huge) high speed vessel, ie by selling the 2 boats and replacing them with 1, is asking for trouble. I recommend that Condor still buys the new vessel BUT keeps a boat dedicated to Weymouth.
