Oppose United Water’s proposed desalination plant for Rockland County.

    1. Petition by

      Rockland Water Coalition

      Nyack, NY

I oppose United Water’s proposal for a desalination plant for Rockland County.

United Water’s proposed desalination plant would greatly increase water rates, would promote overdevelopment, would increase our energy use and carbon footprint, and would imperil an irreplaceable ecosystem of the Hudson River.

 I urge Governor Cuomo, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and the NYS Department of State to:

1.  Oppose an energy-intensive and costly desalination plant in Haverstraw Bay that would be inconsistent with state policies to protect an irreplaceable river habitat.

2.  Support cost-effective, sustainable water policies for Rockland County and the region.

      Rockland says no to drinking water drawn 3.5 miles downstream from Indian Pt. nuclear power plant, no to doubled water rates, and no to a desalination plant that endangers irreplaceable river habitat and raises our carbon footprint substantially.

    2. NEW DEADLINE: Take ONE MINUTE TODAY to Help Stop Rockland Desalination!

      Rockland Water  Coalition
      Petition Organizer

      The DEADLINE FOR WRITTEN PUBLIC COMMENTS on Suez/United Water's desalination proposal for Rockland's drinking water was extended to WEDNESDAY, JULY 9.

      Major decisions will be made in the next few weeks on the desalination proposal. We need to keep the public comments rolling in!

      Tell the Governor & the PSC TODAY: Stop United Water's desalination scheme.
      Manage Rockland’s drinking water for people, not profits!

      Rockland County has created a task force that will guide water resource management with local residents – not corporate profits – in mind.

      But Suez/UW still wants to push through their desalination project for Rockland’s drinking water.

      Tell the PSC TODAY: NOT ONE MORE PENNY SHOULD BE SPENT ON THIS FAILED PROJECT!

      Keep it short, keep it simple, but send it TODAY:

      Email your comments to:
      secretary@dps.ny.gov AND to gov.cuomo@chamber.state.ny.us

      PLEASE BE SURE TO PUT IN THE SUBJECT LINE AND BODY OF YOUR EMAIL:
      Comment on PSC Cases 13-W-0303 AND 13-W-0246 '

      See below for quick talking points!

      Rockland’s new Water Task Force is another sign that Rockland is serious about sustainable, conservation-minded management. And that United Water’s costly, and unnecessary proposal for a desalination plant on the Hudson River is not needed.

      * Contrary to corporate projections, demand for water has not increased – in fact, it has decreased;
      * There are easily accessible, affordable and sustainable ways to curb demand;
      * A newly created task force will ensure Rockland County water use stays well below the available supply;
      * Building an expensive, energy-intensive and environmentally damaging desalination plant will irreparably harm the economy and ecosystem of Rockland County.
      * Rockland does not want water drawn 3.5 miles downstream from a leaking nuclear power plant.
      * Ask the PSC to put a HALT to Suez/UW spending OUR money on permits. No more out of control spending OUR money on their failed project!

      Comments are due by Wednesday, July 9. Submit your comments to the Public Service Commission here.

    3. IN THE HOME STRETCH IN THE FIGHT vs. ROCKLAND DESALINATION

      Rockland Water  Coalition
      Petition Organizer

      We are in the home stretch in the fight vs. Suez/UW's proposal for Rockland's drinking water!

      There is ONE MORE public comment deadline on desalination this week, THURSDAY, JUNE 26. This is the last deadline before major decisions in July in regard to Suez/UW’s proposal.

      Tell the Governor & the PSC: Stop United Water's desalination scheme!
      Manage Rockland’s drinking water for people, not profits!

      There is very good news: Rockland County has created a task force that will guide water resource management with local residents – not corporate profits – in mind.

      But Suez/UW still wants to push through their desalination project for Rockland’s drinking water.

      Tell the PSC today: STOP SUEZ/UW FROM SPENDING ANY MORE OF OUR MONEY ON THIS FAILED PROJECT.

      Rockland’s new Water Task Force is another sign that Rockland is serious about sustainable, conservation-minded management. And that United Water’s costly, and unnecessary proposal for a desalination plant on the Hudson River is NOT NEEDED.

      Now we need you to take the message to the Governor & the Public Service Commission before Thursday, June 26: Rockland does not need a desalination plant because:

      * Contrary to corporate projections, demand for water has not increased – in fact, it has decreased;
      * There are easily accessible, affordable and sustainable ways to curb demand;
      * A newly created task force will ensure Rockland County water use stays well below the available supply;
No more of our money on their failed project!

      THE DEADLINE FOR COMMENT IS THURSDAY, JUNE 26. Submit your comments to the Public Service Commission at:

      I live a block from the Hudson River - it is an important habitat - I do not think it makes sense to get into desalination before conservation is tried.

      I am a resident of Rockland County and would be directly effected by this gross mismanagement of taxpayer and ecological resources.
