Tax Bags

Paper or Plastic? How about neither. The average American uses between 350 and 500 grocery bags each year. Low estimates put Americans as adding 100 billion of the world's 500+ billion bags annually. By charging grocery bags at 15 cents, we could save money, and help the environment. Once in a landfill, plastic bags take 1000 years to photodegrade, which means they don't biodegrade. They just break down into smaller particles and chemicals. Ireland was the first country to impose a 15 cent tax on grocery bags, cutting their use of plastic bags by 90% since 2002 and reducing their overall plastic bag usage by 1.8 billion bags. We can do better.

After living in Europe for a year, where you brought your own bags or bought them in the store, we got used to bringing our own bags. This was 15 yrs ago and we still have most of the canvas bags we bought overseas. What an easy, painless way to do good for the environment! Sometimes it takes being hit in the pocketbook to be woken up.

I am signing this petition because Cecelia is right and to tax grocery bag users is an excellent idea - not only does it help the environment but it also adds revenue to the state coffers!

Thank you for putting this together, Cecelia! I support this proposal. We need to do something similar or introduce beverage container refund value program with plastic and glass bottles, aluminum beverage containers, and other consumables that either end up as roadside trash or in landfills.
