Victory

After a Clovis, New Mexico school district barred all non-academic clubs from meeting during school hours as an attempt to block a Gay-Straight Alliance, high school senior Steven De Los Santos worked with the ACLU of New Mexico to demand equality. Change.org members stood behind De Los Santos, with nearly 2,000 signing a petition to the Clovis Municipal School District urging them to approve a GSA.

The district caved to the pressure in May after the ACLU sent a letter demanding that the GSA be recognized. Students at Clovis High School can now operate a Gay-Straight Alliance on campus, after school hours, with other extra-curricular clubs.

Instead of allowing a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) to meet on campus as a non-extra curricular club that would help create a safe and welcoming environment for any student, Clovis High School let the school board vote to remove all student clubs on April 26, 2011.

Clovis High School student, Steven De Los Santos, wanted to start the GSA as a positive and safe environment for all students on campus. The student club only needs the approval of the school principal in order to meet on campus as a student-initiated club.

Tell the Clovis School Board and Superintendent Terry Murray to allow the GSA on campus -- and allowing access to all clubs.

This is more of the same intolerance you showed the journalism club a couple of years ago. Get educated about what the bible ACTUALLY says - and does NOT say, about homosexuality. Check out "letter to Louise, by a Baptist Preacher named Bruce Lowe.

Must everyone hold the same viewpoint as those having school clubs? What happened to free speech? And school clubs are not intrusive- you do not have to attend them if they offend you!

I'm a school psychologist and I implore you to allow a GSA in your school. If adolescents need anything to grow they need to feel accepted and safe. Any GSA I've been involved with has provided that for students. They get to ask questions and learn about themselves and others. It's a very healthy activity for a school to host. Be proud to meet the needs of ALL your students!

Please consider this club as well as others that help promote understanding. You don't want the stigma attached to suicides from bullying.

I attend classes at Clovis Community College, and I'm EXTREMELY disappointed in the high school's narrow-mindedness. This is 2011, Clovis. It's time to wake up and stop making your town look prejudice!
