Mapping the Subtle Science of Parking Demand

rightsizeparking.org In the absence of nuanced data about how people drive and live in different contexts, city regulations and building developers generally assume that people need way more parking than they really do. A new downtown condo winds up with too much parking. A multifamily apartment near a subway stop gets way too much.

How too much parking hurt cities

Big roads and parking garages are so common in American cities that it's easy to forget these places once functioned exceptionally well without them. However, in their persistent battle to satisfy the demands of motorists, many urban areas are losing out.

The petition photo is a shot of the former Braun HQ (8th & F) on Feb. 16, 2013 as it is being demolished to make room for a parking lot. There is no planned development for the site. The green fence will remain as "mitigation" for the parking lot use.

I believe it is important to preserve certain areas of the city particular historically important buildings. I recall reading a story of a man who lost his Cigar business and was forced out of his building which is not a parking lot. This kind of movement the wrong way to progress and we should focus more on public transportation and less lots.

Those historic buildings are the fabric of Downtown San Diego that makes our downtown so different than many other cities across the country. Hide the parking lots, or put them underground, but don't tear down these beautiful old buildings.

There will be a time when the car is not the main mode of transportation - we must be forward thinking and redesign our cities around more mass transit and away from the individual car. Demolishing prize buildings with sound construction is not the answer and the parking lots will take away vital parts of our neighborhoods.
