From: The Homestead Animal Shelter Project (AKA Gateway Animal Rescue)

We, the undersigned, support the building of an animal shelter in Homestead, Florida to provide services to the underserved areas of South Dade (Homestead, The Redlands, Florida City, Goulds, Naranja, etc.).

There is only one municipal animal shelter in Miami-Dade County (pop. 2.4 million) to handle all of the animals (1.5 million) in South Florida. That shelter was built in the late 1960’s as an animal hospital, and it has never been renovated to account for population increases. It is in Northwest Miami - 30+ miles (or 60+ miles, round-trip) from South Dade.

The Homestead shelter will house dogs, cats, and any other creatures needing assistance. It will function as a shelter for homeless pets and will offer such common shelter elements as spay/neuter services, vaccinations, license tags, responsible pet ownership training, and public education. Students will be encouraged to volunteer to earn community service hours there.

We recommend that this be a NO KILL SHELTER.

Thank you.

    2. Million Animal March at Homestead City Hall on June 20, 2012!

We are presenting our latest updates to the Homestead City Council on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, with photos called the Million Animal March. We have hundreds of photos of rescued and stray animals to represent the thousands that are in need on the streets in Homestead right now.

Why a MILLION animal march? Because Miami-Dade County residents have 300,000+ cats and 600,000+ dogs (for the one inadequate shelter)...PLUS the thousands abandoned on the streets (and born in the Everglades, etc, and as/of strays) each year. The NO-KILL shelter is to feature a large, modern spay/neuter clinic with affordable surgeries available to residents' pets to focus on the pet overpopulation problem.

If you can join us, PLEASE DO! The meeting will be from 5pm to 6:30pm. Bring photos of your rescued pets or any stray pets. We will have boards and supplies for hanging the photos. The meeting will be held at Homestead City Council Chambers, located at 790 North Homestead Blvd. Homestead, Florida 33030

At the meeting of February 6, 2012, the Gateway Animal Rescue committee decided to recommend that the Homestead Animal Shelter be a "NO KILL" facility. We are approaching multiple cities, donors, and sponsors about the creation of this shelter, so this is our recommendation to them. Please remember to have your friends, family, and coworkers sign the petition! WE NEED TO SHOW DEMAND! Thank you!

I think this is important because the only other miami-dade shelter is disturbing and extremely over crowded

Every animal deserves to have a home and a new shelter to help them all would be wonderful.
