City of Chicago: Stop Centro Violence

    1. Petition by

      Douglas Rouse

Centro's primary business is a club from 10pm to 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.  Alcohol should be a secondary activity according to their license.

Further, this business is repeatedly attracting a dangerous clientele which requires them to hire security guards armed with guns and bats.

Prior to coming to the neighborhood in Spring 2011, late night brawls never occurred.

Our neighborhood will not stand for the continued disruption and danger to our community.

To:
Alderman Ameya Pawar, Alderman
City of Chicago, Department of Business Affairs
Alderman Tom Tunney, Alderman
I just signed the following petition addressed to the City of Chicago Department of Business Affairs and the 47th Ward Alderman Pawar.

----------------
The purpose of this petition is to suspend Centro's license to provide liquor to its guests.

Continued violence related to Centro must be stopped.
----------------

Sincerely,

Lakeview Citizens United

Sincerely,

    1. Cease and Desist Order Issued

      Douglas Rouse
      Petition Organizer

Centro was served on Friday with a cease and desist order that they not operate in a way that would require Public Place of Amusement License. The special unit which investigates License infractions was dispatched this weekend and found that Centro was not in violation of any element of their licensing. Per our conversations with Jeff we believe it is still his intention to sell the business and move Centro although he was not willing to have that discussion in the press. We are continuing to work with License Enforcement and Chicago Police to ensure that Centro operates within the terms of its license and with as little disruption as possible as they endeavor to transition before the new year.

If you have any additional questions or concerns feel free to e-mail or call me.

Fact check: 80%+ of the signers of this petition are local with zip codes in Ald. Tunney and Ald. Pawar's Wards.

    4. Neighbors Rally To Close Ashland Ave Restaurant

Thank you to Center Square Journal for shining more light on this situation. The signers of this petition predominately live in this neighborhood and will support local businesses and restaurants. Centro clearly is not a restaurant, it is a club and we cannot support a club in our neighborhood.

    5. Centro Ownership Not Selling

      Douglas Rouse
      Petition Organizer

Despite what Centro agreed to last week in a public meeting with the Alderman, they are in fact not selling and are going to continue to operate as a club.

Several people from the petition were interviewed this evening about Centro and our petition to close it down. If there is a story, it will be aired tonight, Wednesday, at 10pm.

    7. Centro Events Continue, Transition Planned

      Douglas Rouse
      Petition Organizer

A meeting occurred today with Centro's owners, Ald. Pawar, a representative from Ald. Tunney's office, a representative from CPD and community members. Centro will continue to operate as a club but has agreed to scale it down. They also said that they are securing a new location for Centro and are in discussions to transition ownership of the current location to a new restaurateur.

Ald. Pawar and Ald. Tunney's representative were supportive of the transition and insisted that Centro operate as a restaurant. However, promoter-led events at Centro are scheduled for the coming weeks including over Halloween weekend.

Please stand together to keep our community safe. Remain aware of this issue until it is proactively resolved. Continued communication and dialog with each other and the City officials is the key to a timely resolution for our family neighborhood.

    11. Ald. Pawar Response - More signers please!

"We have held a number of meetings with the CPD and community members to reach a resolution. It has, however, become abundantly clear that Centro is not a good-will partner, nor is it an appropriate business for the community and the Alderman will be taking steps with CPD and community members to take progressive action. There are a series of steps that must be taken to close a business. The circulation of that petition is one of these steps and the Alderman is in complete support of this. We know patience is wearing thin for everyone, it is for our office as well. Please know that our office is no longer trying to mediate a resolution between the business and the community – we are in complete agreement that the owners of Centro can no longer continue to operate this establishment."

This place is causing all sorts of trouble for the neighborhood. We are in complete support of a restaurant being put there, but not a club. This place is bringing violent and disruptive people to the area. It is keeping neighbors up at night. Cars are zooming by honking and the late night drunk Centro visitors are loud and violent right outside our window. This NEEDS to be taken care of!

I have had enough of the fights and screaming that are taking place after the bar closes. There are also drunk drivers speeding away when they leave the bar. They attract gang bang wannabes and are ruining the reputation of a family oriented neighborhood.

In addition to the many legitimate reasons cited by others, the valet drivers drive way too fast and recklessly through the alleys and neighborhood streets, violating several laws and threatening the safety of the neighborhood. The cussing and screaming from patrons of the club is a frequent occurrence, often between 2 am and 4 am. Adios Centro!
