Change CMS Bell Schedule

      Charlotte, NC

The current CMS bell schedules are causing problems for teachers, children, and parents. The 4:15 dismissal times are too late for students and the 7 hour day is too long for elementary children.  After school activities are limited, time for homework is reduced, teachers are working the equivalent of an extra month with no pay, and most importantly, children do not have time to be kids.  Some students are getting on buses before 6:00am while others return home after 5:30pm.  There are major negative impacts on staff, children and families.  Please do what is best for our children and institute age appropriate bell schedules.

    1. New School Schedule Task Force

      Susan Plaza
      Petition Organizer

Dr. Morrison has formed a new School Schedule Task Force to find solutions for the late bell / longer day schedule problems. There are CMS elementary and middle school teachers, principals, parents, and Ann Clark serving on the task force. It is chaired by Bill Anderson of Meck Ed. We have met 3 times and have developed a survey that should be sent to parents and teachers shortly. We are still working to fix this!

    2. Great City Schools Visit

      Susan Plaza

Our group met with the Council of Great City Schools last week to share information with them as they study the bell schedules. They will make recommendations to CMS in September. Unfortunately, elementary school teachers were conveniently left off the list of "key stakeholders" who were invited by CMS to meet with the Council. We did our best to speak for them.

    5. Update on continued efforts

We are still working on making a change. BOE members do not want to give teachers back their planning time. Without a shorter elementary day, there is no budget neutral solution to eliminate the 4:15 bell. Maybe we need new BOE members?! Vote in November. We are continuing to work with CMS transportation to find a solution for the late bell. CMS administration has told us they will be doing a survey in September of staff and parents/community about the bell schedule. Any teachers who have signed this petition, please email me at susantplaza@gmail.com if you can help us. We need planning time data, late bus data, early dismissal data, and teacher retention/transfer data. Thanks!

    6. UPDATE ON BELL SCHEDULE TASK FORCE WORK

      Susan Plaza
      Petition Organizer

Since November a collaborative effort between CMS staff, teachers, parents, and health professionals has been under way within the newly formed School Schedule Task Force. The Goals of this Task Force are to: To assist CMS with the discovery and implementation of school schedules that optimize learning as well as support the broader developmental needs of children and adolescents, and to secondly seek short term economical solutions to limit school dismissals after 3:45 pm and restore planning time for CMS elementary teachers.

The task force has worked with Transportation and discovered two options to achieve the goals, one with costs under $2M and the other saving over $1M. We are continuing to work with CMS to make changes.

    7. Teachers Speak Out at BOE Meeting Tonight

      Susan Plaza
      Petition Organizer

10 Teachers spoke out about the longer day and late bell at the BOE meeting this evening. They gave very compelling reasons to change the bell schedule. Our CMS/Parent work group (Bell Schedule Task Force) has met 4 times, we have also met with the Transportation Office to collaborate on solutions to reduce busing costs so we can find a way to fix this. We are hopeful that change can be made for the 13/14 school year. Please pass this petition on to your schools, there are many people unaware of this effort. Thank you! Susan
