Chancellor, Bob Jones University: Apologize for stating that homosexuals should be stoned to death

    1. Petition by

"I'm sure this will be greatly misquoted but it would not be a bad idea to bring the swift justice today that was brought in Israel's day against murder and rape and homosexuality. I guarantee it would solve the problem post-haste if homosexuals were stoned, if murderers were immediately killed as the Bible commands."

-Dr. Bob Jones III

At the White House in 1980, Dr. Bob Jones III, then-president (and now chancellor) of Bob Jones University spoke to a reporter for the associated press suggesting that America would be better off if gay men and lesbians were stoned to death.

For thirty-one years he has remained unapologetic.

Thousands of young people have attended the Bob Jones family of schools in Greenville, SC under the leadership of a man who wishes some of them dead. For their sake and the sake of students yet to attend, many of whom will have difficulty accepting their sexual orientation because of Dr. Jones and his attitudes, it is time Bob Jones University and its leadership, including Dr. Jones, are made aware of the harm they have caused. Apologizing for this statement is one small step in the right direction.

Bob Jones III, Chancellor, Bob Jones University
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Bob Jones University.

Apologize for stating that homosexuals should be stoned to death.

Following the NYC Pride March, our petition now has 1,210 signatures. As we have seen recently, public statements and calls for persecuting or killing gay people that are very similar Bob Jones III's 1980 statement are still being made from fundamentalist pulpits. We have a lot of trouble understanding how people who believe in God's grace would also feel compelled to spread such a hateful, violent message. An apology from Bob Jones III would do a lot to tone down the rhetoric within fundamentalism.

It is quite possible to have theological disagreements without resorting to the rhetoric of violence and the language of hatred and fear. In this petition, we aren't asking BJU to change its theology, but we are asking the university to apologize and to change its rhetoric. We will be closing this petition soon and delivering it to Bob Jones University. Please share with your families and friends.

Honestly just yesterday afternoon I said we'd be lucky to get 100 signatures on this petition. My friend Jeffrey predicted a lot more than that. So, now that I've been proven wrong (as of this message we have 101 signatures in just over 12 hours) let's prove Jeffrey right. Send this to all your friends and their friends. C H A N G E!!!

      Bob Jones III,

I ask that if you refuse to apologize for your remarks, please stone me first as I am not only lesbian, but transgender, bi-sexual and pan-sexual. According to your misled belief system I must be #1 on your list.

Apparently one of the 10 Commandments has no meaning to Bob. "Thou shalt not kill." Hi suggestion to kill anyone has the ability to make it OK for another person to follow through with his suggestion. Didn't his Christ say "He without sin pick up the first stone"? OK Bob! Pick up or shut up!
