To build all-weather running and enclosed cycling tracks in Aberystwyth.

There is a recognised long standing requirement for a competitive athletics track in Aberystwyth, and over many years and despite many meetings and campaigns, nothing has yet been delivered. Ceredigion is now one of the few counties in the UK to have no standard-sized athletics track whatsoever. Both the Aberystwyth town and University Athletics clubs are forced to focus on ‘distance’ road running, and cannot cater effectively for other disciplines of athletics such as sprinting, middle distance and field events. This means that the area is deeply restricted in its ability to cater to the range and depth of athletics or to support any form of competition and consequently – despite the fact that both clubs are capable of attracting enthusiastic members, interest can wane and potential athletes are lost. The University Club have outgrown the 2 lane track on the Penglais campus, and it is logistically impossible to hold training amongst groups of differing abilities focusing on different forms of the sport.

While cycling is a growing sport in Wales, with mountain biking facilities in particular proving to be very popular, there are severe limitations for other aspects of the sport. With the nearest indoor Velodrome situated in Newport and with no open air enclosed cycle track facilities within 50 miles of Aberystwyth this means that participants have to travel long distances use the facilities and in turn this restricts the focus of the town cycling club to road based training and to the dangers of traffic. This is a distinct barrier for parents who are understandably reluctant to allow their children onto heavily used roads. An enclosed cycling facility would provide a safe location to encourage children to cycle, allow adults to do ‘speed-work’ and enhance their training and, provide a training and competition arena to attract riders from elsewhere in Mid Wales.

At this time the eyes of the world will be on the London 2012 Olympic games, a recipient of a vast amount of spending on sporting facilities in London. The organisers of the games including Sebastian Coe have repeatedly spoken of ‘a sporting legacy for the whole of Britain’. We agree wholeheartedly and believe that the development of athletics and cycling facilities in Aberystwyth would build on the spirit of the Games to create a real legacy - a thriving sporting hub, unique in Wales, and where it is needed most, in one of the most country's most deprived areas in terms of sporting opportunities.

Sign our petition to give your support to our campaign and help us make these tracks a part of Aberystwyth’s regeneration agenda.

Adeiladu traciau athletau a seiclo caeedig pob tywydd yn Aberystwyth

Mae galw wedi bod ers amser hir am drac athletau cystadleuol ar gyfer Aberystwyth, cafwyd llawer o gyfarfodydd a cheisiwyd trefnu nifer o ymgyrchoedd heb lwyddiant. Erbyn hyn Ceredigion yw un o'r ychydig siroedd ym Mhrydain sydd heb drac maint safonol o gwbl.  Mae hyn yn golygu bod yr ardal yn dlawd iawn yn nhermau cyfleoedd i gymryd rhan yn y rhan fwyaf o fathau o athletau.  Mae datblygiad clybiau athletau yn y dref ac yn y Brifysgol wedi eu cyfyngu gan eu bod yn gorfod ffocysu ar ar redeg pell ar heolydd yn unig, does dim modd ymestyn i ddisgyblaethau eraill fel sbrintio a champau maes. Mae Clwb y Brifysgol wedi tyfu'n rhy fawr i'r trac dwy lon sydd ym Mhenglais.  Mae'n amhosibl cynnal grwpiau rhedeg o alluoedd gwahanol gan ffocysu ar wahanol ffurfiau o athletau

Tra bod seiclo yn chwaraeon sy'n tyfu'n gyflym yng Nghymru, gydag adnoddau seiclo mynydd yn enwedig yn boblogaidd iawn, mae cyfyngiadau difrifol ar agweddau eraill o'r gamp.  Un felodrom dan do sydd yn Nghymru, yng Nghasnewydd, ac ychydig iawn o felodromau neu adnoddau seiclo caeedig eraill sydd yma, dim byd o gwbl yng Nghanolbarth Cymru.  Mae'n golygu unwaith eto bod yr ardal yn dlawd iawn o ran cyfleoedd i gymryd rhan mewn llawer o fathau o seiclo. Mae twf clwb seiclo'r dref wedi ei gyfyngu gan fod rhieni'n petruso rhag caniatau i blant seiclo oherwydd peryglon traffig ar y ffyrdd.  Buasai adnodd seiclo caeedig yn darparu lleoliad diogel i blant seiclo, ac yn caniatau i aelodau sy'n oedolion i weithio ar gyflymder, ac ymestyn eu hymarfer.

Yn ystod y cyfnod yma bydd llygaid y byd ar gemau Olympaidd 2012 sy'n digwydd yn Llundain, fydd yn derbyn gwariant enfawr ar adnoddau chwaraeon yn y ddinas.  Mae trefnwyr y gemau, gan gynnwys Sebastian Coe, wedi sôn yn gyson am yr angen am “etifeddiaeth chwaraeon i Brydain gyfan”. Cytunwn yn llwyr a hyn a hoffem osod yr achos o blaid datblygu adnoddau athletau a seiclo yn Aberystwyth fel ffordd o fuddsoddi yn nyfodol chwaraeon ble mae'r angen fwyaf, yn un o'r ardaloedd sy'n fwyaf difreintiedig yn nhermau cyfleoedd chwaraeon.  Mae'r fenter yma gan gymuned athletau a seiclo'r ardal yn adeiladu ar ymdrechion sylweddol y gorffennol, ac yn anelu at ddod ac adnodd i'r dref a fuasai'n etifeddiaeth chwaraeon addas i ganolbarth Cymru yn sgil y gemau Olympaidd

Arwyddwch ein deiseb i roi eich cefnogaeth i'n hymgyrch i wneud y traciau yma'n rhan o agenda adnewyddu Aberystwyth

A place for young people to exercise in their desired way is essential in aberystwyth an area where there is so many young people and a lack of running facilities and cycling paths.
