Stop the Closing of Historical Landmark The Gold Dust Lounge

Nobody wants to hear that their favorite watering hole is closing down, which is why we're not going to say the Gold Dust Lounge is shuttering -- at least not yet.

This afternoon, the city's Historic Preservation Commission voted against designating the popular bar as a historic landmark, claiming that doing so would not be effective in saving the bar -- and the commission is correct about that. Only a judge can decide whether or not the Gold Dust lounge will stay or go.

This Wednesday at City Hall, the Historic Preservation Commission will be holding a closed hearing (which means no new information can be introduced, no one can speak unless the Commission asks us a question) to determine the fate of our Landmark Nomination for the Gold Dust. We need your support. However the Commission votes on this issue, we want to flood the room with our supporters in t-shirts, so even though we can't speak, we're showing, we care.

    3. Gold Dust Sued for not Vacating!

The owners of the San Francisco building that houses the Gold Dust Lounge filed suit against the longtime establishment Monday for failing to vacate after being given three months to do so, Handlery Hotels spokesman Sam Singer said.

Handlery Hotels filed an unlawful detainer action against Bovis, Inc., the operators of the Gold Dust, for failing to leave the Union Square location.

"Handlery Hotels did not want to file this suit, but they were left with no choice when the Gold Dust failed to honor their word and leave the property as they expressly agreed to in their lease," Singer said.

According to Singer, the Bovises signed a lease with the property owners in March 2011 with the specific language, "Landlord shall have the right to terminate the Term of the Lease, as amended by this Amendment, without cause, at any time, but with no less then 90 days prior written notice to the Tenant."
