Canyons Board of Education

Honor the Bond and Preserve our Neighborhood Schools

We all want our children to attend schools close to their homes, and we want our limited school funding to be used wisely. The Canyons Board of Education is making decisions that do not support those desires. The superintendent proposed, and the Canyons Board of Education is considering, a plan that would close Crescent View Middle School, which is the newest middle school in the district, it has the largest enrollment and is located in a highly populated area (11150 South, 300 East). The plan also includes a major new construction project that was not included in the bond or listed in the Board’s own priorities.
• We ask that the Canyons Board of Education honor the original intent of the recent bond to enclose classrooms and install air conditioning at Albion, Crescent View and Indian Hills middle schools and to not close or repurpose any of these schools. The superintendent’s proposal advocates using bond funds in a manner that was not approved by voters. If the original intent of the bond is not honored, and this proposal moves forward, there is strong potential for tax increases for district patrons.
• We ask that the Canyons Board of Education approve the original middle school boundary plan that utilizes only existing schools until or unless a new bond is passed that will allow the board to evaluate new middle school construction options. This includes allowing students in the Crescent View Middle School neighborhood to continue to attend their school.
• We ask that if a new middle school needs to be built in the Canyons School District or if the board is considering closing or repurposing a school:
o We ask the board to conduct a formal, external cost benefit analysis of any school closure and take into consideration all middle schools in the district prior to making any school closure decisions. This cost benefit analysis should be shared as part of the public record, and public hearings should be held regarding the analysis.
o We ask the board to allow the boundary committee to re-evaluate the boundaries based on any school closure decisions only after the cost benefit analysis process has been completed.

This proposal amounts to legislative and financial bait-and-switch. The bond voted on by the public in 2010 allocated $18.5MM to renovate Crescent View Middle school (enclose classrooms and install air conditioning). These priorities are listed right on Canyon School District's own website (http://www.canyonsdistrict.org/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&layout=item&id=687&Itemid=528). That is what the public VOTED for. Any changes to the premise on which the bond was voted for back in 2010 requires much more public discussion and input than what is occurring now.

My grand children live in the neighborhood right by the school. That was one of the reasons they bought their house last year, because it was so close to the elementary and middle school.

      Poor use of public funds.

The school board has been less than forth coming about this potential school closure and added cost that we don't have and has never been approved. It is absolutly rediculous to close a school in a better location and bus kids 3 times as far as they had to go now. The last thing we need is more conjestion on 13th East. It is difficult now with Summit and the Nursery School and adding a middle school, especially one that is not needed will make it worse. Try getting out of the South Mountain area in the mornings or afternoons and you will see the effect that this would have on the surrounding neighborhoods.

Proposal makes no sense and is a waste of our tax dollars.
