We know of Canon Inc still investigating the problem, and as our hopes for the latest 1.2.1 firmware to fix it weren't satisfied, we kindly ask all involved Canon staff to deploy available resources to find the solution that will ease up our lives sooner.

Sincerely,

    1. Any freezes of your cameras with 1.2.1 or higher firmware?

      Maxim Drygin
      Petition Organizer

      Hi all,

I haven't heard of a case of a freeze similar to the one we fought against after updating firmware to 1.2.1 at least.

That freeze case that I had myself was outlined in great detail as "solved" on my page devoted to the Canon 5dmk3 freeze phenomenon - https://www.facebook.com/FrozenCanon5DMark3camerafreeze).

If no more new freezes reported by anyone with firmware version 1.2.1 or higher, I'll be closing this petition as "won" on 18 August 2014 - given that so far no freezes with new firmware were reported, Canon did care to fix the Error 80 bug that they (and I) think was linked to the freeze of the kind that was killing files being recorded.

If you had a freeze on 1.2.1 or higher firmware version 5dmk3 camera, I'd like to hear about it.

      Cheers
      Max

    2. I think we may consider the freeze problem resolved

      Maxim Drygin

I bought a brand new 5Dmk3 two weeks ago.

It froze on me two days ago (Sunday 18 August 2013) only after three minutes of a shot being recorded (03:04, to be precise), during my third wedding shoot with this camera (fifth - overall, including a brief test shoot of the glidecam setup during the week).

I have a feeling we may close this chapter now and consider the problem as resolved - I've written a mini 'War and Peace' post on all this, with details on my successful attempts to recover the file, with the video of the freeze itself etc, at my page on this so please head for details to https://www.facebook.com/FrozenCanon5DMark3camerafreeze

    3. Grey-market 5Dmk3 mainboard replacement costs

      Maxim Drygin
      Petition Organizer

792.88 AUD (GST included) is the price of the freezing grey-market 5Dmk3 body motherboard replacement here in Australia - just received this information from Sydney Canon Service Centre Manager Mr Ramon Diaz.

The price is exchange rate-dependent so is only current as of the date of this message was created, but nevertheless gives a rough indication of how much one can expect it to cost should you go for this (still precautionary) measure of the freeze occurrence in the future.

      Shipping costs aren't included.

    4. A Facebook page on the freeze - the issue still remains unresolved

      Maxim Drygin
      Petition Organizer

      Hi all,

I've created a FB page as a place for all the latest news as well as known official Canon investigation updates -

      https://www.facebook.com/FrozenCanon5DMark3camerafreeze

It will be repopulated with facts and past events as the petition was growing support and as Canon was changing the status of the issue from "unheard of" to the "please bring the cameras in for a possible PCB replacement" currently.

There's already a couple of posts there about known data recovery software combos and procedures that may help some of those in trouble to either retrieve lost files, or to simply be aware of the dos and dont's in case of the freeze.

The page should be open to comments - and liking, and sharing, obviously, which may act as your 2 cents of helping out those from your Facebook friends universe outskirts who may be struggling with the problem but have kept themselves in isolation from the entire world on how to address it.

    5. A subclass of the freeze fixed by replacement of a faulty CMOS connection

      Maxim Drygin
      Petition Organizer

Our fellow Sydneysider Raymone Farruggia, rang me to advice that a Canon service rep told him they found the fault in his 5diii. He was told the connection to the CMOS was faulty and had been replaced.

As official email from my Canon contact lead confirmed this case was different to the freeze we reported earlier, and was treated a a one off job, I encourage everyone still having the issue to bring their cameras in for inspection.

Emmanuel had the motherboard of the camera replaced as commented by the same Canon service rep, "just in case".

    6. 1.2.1 firmware doesn't have the freeze

      Maxim Drygin
      Petition Organizer

In response to my email asking to confirm whether latest 1.2.1 firmware contains the fix of the freeze problem, I've just been informed by Canon Australia of the following:

"Unfortunately this firmware announcement is unrelated. It corrects a freeze that happens when activating the shutter button for the purpose of still image capture while in the middle of video capture. We also understand that the video capture freeze reported by your group does not display Err 70 or Err 80 either, as it does in this case.

The phenomenon reported by your group is still under investigation by Canon Inc."

In a view of further freeze crashes expected to happen with mk3 owners, I repeat my call on bringing your cameras in for inspection to local Canon Service centres.

    8. Bring your cameras in for main board replacement.

      Maxim Drygin
      Petition Organizer

People start reporting Canon services replacing main boards of their faulty 5Dmk3 cameras upon receiving, indicating the replaced part number as CG-3158-000 named in the supporting post-service papers as “PCB ASS’Y, MAIN”.

I'm collecting these documents - if you have one from Canon following your cameras fixed, send it to me to maxim.drygin_at_gmail.com

At this stage Canon reps are quiet on confirmation the main board is at fault as per my request, which could mean they are either waiting for more cameras brought for inspection to verify this internally before going public, or they simply ignored my request as “no comments” strategy works a treat for a big fish when numbers of protesters are lower than estimated numbers of products affected.

Keep pushing the message through, guys, share it with everyone you know who owns a 5Dmk3 - and ask them to fill their serials in this survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KHKR2XS

      Cheers

Canon 5dmk3 petition – new info from Canon and the gear shift towards bringing the troubled cameras to local Canon service centres.

Firstly, the petition has made a significant impact on Canon on all levels as I heard from Canon reps.

Secondly, the video produced by Steven Marshall helped Canon Inc to make some discovery that at the moment is related to only one sample of 5Dmk3 they investigated. I'm bound by non-disclosure to share more on this, sorry.

I’ve been asked by Canon to channel the following request to everyone: “Users EOS 5D Mark IIIs and CF cards who can reproduce the freeze during video recording to please bring the camera and the CF card to the nearest service centre in their region”.

You can find your local service centres contacts here http://www.canon.com/worldwide/index.html

Whether your camera is grey-imported or has local warranty, bring it in, my guess Canon is very interested inspecting it.

    12. Canon 5Dmk3 freeze petition - things are moving

      Maxim Drygin

Info from one of fellow supporters, Warren Bonello from Australian Wedding Cinematographers forum just now:

"Hi Maxim Drygin an UPDATE just received a follow up call from Canon Australia regarding the camera freeze issue that i experienced almost a year ago. (I think your online partition is getting through!) The caller asked me a series of questions regarding the fault and mentioned several times they are investigating the cause, he also said they only have 2 known cameras that have been looked at (mine and another) so it is very difficult to assess with only 2 units. I found it weird that given all the online complaints that we have heard only 2 cams have been taken in :/ he left the conversation saying that he will keep me informed on any progress they make. Fingers crossed."

Very good signs of discomfort from Canon side I think.

If everyone of you guys posted a link to the petition at your FB timeline, this would give us a few more signatures to use the momentum.

I too have just had a rreeze issue with Canon 5dMkiii on Firmware 1.2.3 but, one of a different nature I think? Happened in Stills Manual Mode but rectified by removing battery and cf card . Strange thing was when frozen in M Mode, I swirtched to A, and it worked, then back to M and nothing? Tried all other modes but only A would work?

Canon support advised me to observe closely and if it repeats , return for detailed inspection!
