Broward County Mayor and Commissioners: Workers at FLL should be able to afford Thanksgiving

Don’t you enjoy having family and friends over for Thanksgiving? Those juicy turkey drumsticks with gravy and cranberry sauce. Plenty of mashed potatoes on the side and a good slice of pumpkin pie. Mmmm, happiness can be so easy. Except when you can’t afford dinner.

This year, the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner is up 10% -- on top of a last year’s 13% hike. But workers like myself and other employees of airline contractors who provide critical services such as cleaning terminals and aircrafts, pushing wheelchairs, handling baggage and working to keep Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport (FLL) safe and secure, won’t be able to celebrate this great American tradition. With my wages of $4.65 plus tips and no health insurance, I can barely make ends meet and cover the basic needs of my three children.

Like many of my coworkers I struggled on minimum wage for years, while working at one of the major economic centers for the area. At FLL, airlines and their contractors profit under a business model that requires the workers to labor in a shadow economy with no job security, working for minimum wage, hustling tips and lacking basic benefits, like health insurance or paid sick time.

Everybody should be able to afford Thanksgiving. That’s why the wheelchair assistants, skycaps, cabin cleaners and security officers of FLL are asking for your support.

Please, support FLL workers in their fight for better working conditions and sign the petition.

Petition:
Dear Broward County Mayor and Commissioners,

As a Fort Lauderdale International –Hollywood Airport visitor and responsible global citizen, I think that every American should be able to celebrate Thanksgiving in the company of the ones they love. That’s why I urge you to make sure that all workers at the airport have decent working standards that allow them to spend quality time with their families.

At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, airline service companies have created a race to the bottom that is undermining the livelihoods of thousands of workers and their families.

As the owner and operator of the airport, Broward County has the power and responsibility to ensure:

- Workers at FLL are paid decent wages.

- Airline contractors at FLL are held to quality standards (training, staffing, responsibility records, etc.) that allow workers to provide passengers with the best possible traveling experience.

Thank you for your time.

Income inequality is at an all-time high. It would take such a small amount of money to help these families. It's like the commissioners could give to their own charity!!
