Bring Mental Healthcare to Pikeville

In the heart of Appalachia, Pikeville, Kentucky, Pikeville Medical Center is the top, superb hospital, expanding all of the time. The staff is wonderful, physicians are highly professional, buildings (offices and centers) are incredible, ranking among the nation's best-even the hospital being number 1 itself, has most all anyone would need, except...a psychiatric facility.

Its a shame that people in our area have to leave Pikeville and travel to either Hazard, KY or Lexington, KY to receive psychiatric care (ARH or Ridge etc)-not just excellent psychiatric care-psychiatric care period. The mind is the most powerful part of a human being, and it should be treated just as highly as the heart. Not only is a facility needed for the mentally ill, or stabilization of the mentally ill, our region needs local psychiatrists to visit, true psychiatrists-ones that will be affiliated with the hospital. Someone who is suicidal needs immediate counseling and hospitalization. Perhaps sometimes a forty five minute drive to the hospital at minimum is just too long to wait...

So many lives could be changed forever, the future of the people themselves, even society, with proper psychiatric care. There would be more people able to hold jobs, enroll, and stay in school, remaining stable on the right medications if need be. If Pikeville Medical Center expanded in this way, they would sure make even a lot more money, and I know that is appealing. I feel that Pikeville Medical Center has the potential for quite a successful outcome with its psychiatric patients.

Therapy is well needed as well among people who have been traumatized, or are even just going through a very hard time in a marriage or on the job. Follow up-treatment with counselors/psychologists, is much needed and for maintaining a healthy mindset/lifestyle from then on out, or at least on occasion. So...Big money for PMC! $$$

Listed on the Pikeville Medical Center site is what they have to offer. Well, if you click on this link and view their services, you will find no 'Psychiatry or Mental Health'!

Finally, a psychiatric facility and psychiatrists/therapists offices under Pikeville Medical Center is ultimately important for saving lives. Some people need medication to remain healthy and stable. Being treated by these local psychiatrists and seen by therapists employed by PMC is going to change the way society functions. I know this is going to be epic!

I am from Kentucky though currently in California. I work with those impacted by mental health issues everyday and recognise the great need for great care.

I am Bipolar and drive 240 miles per trip twice a week to see my PDoc, there needs to be more mental health care in our rural areas, not only is it less stressfull but it would be a lot less expensive especially now that gas prices are thru the roof.

I don't live in Pikeville, I live in somerset, but I'm all for expanding ANY town to have help for the mentally ill. It will make things so MUCH easier on them. I'm bipolar and I know how difficult it is to deal with little, and even NO help in the community. It is time the state starts caring more about people who WANT the help, when they need it!!

Tired of our area never having services that cities take for granted. Even though I havent needed this kind of care I know many who have. I think this is a good idea.
