Nina Simone, dubbed The High Priestess of Soul, is an American icon and a music legend. Because of this, it is without a doubt straight up disrespectful to Ms. Simone and her legacy to get an actress who looks nothing like she did to portray her in a movie about her life. Getting light complexioned actors to play the roles of dark complexioned historical figures is not only a sign of blatant disrespect to the persons they are portraying, but it is also disrespectful to their families, to history, to the people who look like the persons being whitewashed, and to the intelligence of the audience. For too long Hollywood has gotten away with this practice of revisionist history and it is time that we let our voices be heard, be it by this petition or by boycotting the movie if no change has been made as to who will portray Nina Simone. This is not a diss to Zoe Saldana. She is an excellent actress, but this movie role so much bigger than her undeniable talent.

Our call for a casting change has been ignored so now, we're in full on boycott mode. Please sign today to as a symbol of letting the producers of this film know that our voice will be heard through our dollars. We are organizing people of all backgrounds so that they may come together in solidarity and let people know that we will not continue to support the lies and the disrespect that Hollywood has been dishing out for the past 100+ years.

Hello! I would first like to thank you for signing the petition and letting your voices be heard. I have been reading the comments you've made on the petition and around the web and I have made a decision to join forces with others to organize a boycott of the movie since no changes have been made. We are starting a non-profit organization called Your Story Foundation where we will be committed to lobbying/rallying against colorism, historical inaccuracies, and any other forms of ethnic disrespect. It's time that we take control of our images by being proactive and coming together to bring about the changes we want to see. For updates on what is going on with the boycott and the foundation go to the link below:

Below is a letter Ms. Simone's daughter wrote and posted on the Nina Simone Facebook page.

Greetings Nina Simone Lovers, Simone here.

I have read many of the comments am happy you all took the time to share your thoughts and feelings.

      Here's mine:

When the announcement initially hit the press with MJ Blige cast as Nina (about 6 yrs ago) I heard it along with everyone else. The story was written as a love story between my mother and her former nurse, Clifton Henderson and primarily takes place during the last 8 years of her life.

Please note, this project is unauthorized. The Nina Simone Estate was never asked permission nor invited to participate.

There are far too many beautiful black talented actresses who would do this justice, Why Zoe who is neither!

Someone comparable to her looks should be used. Nina was totally into her blackness. This is an injustice to her depiction in this movie.

This is important to me because, I flow the REAL Nina Simone story. She preaches so much about her BLACKNESS & how she loves her kinky hair and dark skin so if she feels so content in loving herself for being a BLACK/Shaded woman why the hell would these fools cast Zoe? Then, put her in black face? That's a slap in the damn face. I can't believe these people. Let's put Uzo Aduba in that role!
