Boy Scout Members opposed to Anti-Gay Discrimination

    1. Petition by

I am a Boy Scout. I recently completed the requirements and submitted my application to become an Eagle Scout. I am also a member of the Order of the Arrow and was the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of my troop. I am grateful for the positive opportunities I have had in scouting and proud to be a part of the organization.

Yet once in a while, when I mention that I am a scout, someone reminds me of this policy, and I cannot help but feel ashamed. Although such blatant discrimination never affected my personal scouting experience, it casts a shadow on the entire national program. Now we scouts must wear our uniforms with less pride. We cannot wholeheartedly claim to be community servants and roles models for our peers and for society. No longer is the phrase "I am a Boy Scout" or "I am an Eagle Scout" met with automatic admiration and respect. The bigotry of the policy promoted by our leaders hinders all the good we scouts try to do in the world. It is not scout like. It does not follow the ideals of our oath and law.

I am not gay, but I want to show my gay brothers loyalty, friendship, courtesy, kindness, and bravery. I want to help them just as I want to help all other people at all times. So I plead with my national leaders to do this good turn. End the archaic, immoral policy that prevents gays from participating the Boy Scouts of America. Do it in recognition of how much gay scouts and leaders have to contribute to our program. But do it too for all those men and boys who are already part of scouting. Do it so that we can again speak highly of the program, command respect as members, and be proud to call ourselves Boy Scouts.

If you are a member, past or present, of the Boy Scouts of America and you too are opposed to the bigotry and discrimination of the organization's anti-homosexual policy, please sign this petition. Show the scouting leadership that the Boy Scouts themselves want and need this change.

Dear Boy Scouts: Please do not change your ban on homosexuals participating in the Scouts. Such a policy change would violate the moral values inherent in the Scout Law and Oath, and it would be a slap in the face to the churches, religious organizations, and local volunteers who sponsor and fund the vast majority of Scout troops.

It makes me sad and angry--as an Eagle Scout myself--to think that this reprehensible policy is turning good young men away from what should be a great experience. I'm even conflicted about whether I want my child follow a path that was so important to me. It doesn't need to be this way.

As an elderly Eagle Scout, I feel it is time for us to obey the Scout Law, and end BSA's homophobic policies. Please allow this issue to come to an open vote this May. We have no reason to keep this discussion secret, unless we are protecting bigots from being exposed. A secret vote to continue discrimination is not in keeping with the values I learned from the Boy Scouts.

As an adult scouter and former Scoutmaster I urge our organization to recognize that its anti-gay policy is counter to the oath and law we recite and pledge to follow. Please rescind the policy and welcome all who would devote themselves to the true Scouting ideals.
