SPANISH VERSION OF THE PETITION

Please support Liubou's campaign calling on the authorities to return the body of her son

My name is Liubou Kavaliova. On November 30th the Supreme Court of Belarus sentenced my son Uladzislau Kavalyou (Vladislav Kovalev) and another young man Dzmitry Kanavalau (Dmitry Konovalov) to death.  Kanavalau was convicted in organizing the terrorist attacks in 2005 in Vitebsk, in 2008 in Minsk, and in the subway of Minsk in April 2011. My son Uladzislau was convicted of aiding.

The accusations are based on the statements made by these two young men, which, as many believe, were given under physical and emotional pressure. None of what has been said in court is supported by any evidence. My son insisted he had not been involved in the terrorist attack and suggested Dzmitry Kanavalau has no relation to them either.

I know that my son was innocent. So did victims of the attack and many international human rights organizations.

However, instead of looking for those who are actually responsible for these terrorist crimes, Belarusian authorities executed my son and his friend sometime between March 11th and 16th, 2012...

This is a horror that I would not wish to anyone...

At the moment Belarus is the only country in Europe, which continues to execute death sentences. And this should stop. How many other people like my son are going to be killed in Belarus?

With this campaign I am calling on the Belarusian authorities to immediately abolish the death penalty -- please join me and spread the word.

"... reports from a range of independent human rights organisations raise questions about the standard of evidence provided and the conduct of the trial which resulted in the sentencing to death of Dzmitry Kanavalaw and Uladzislaw Kavalyow, on 30 November."
"I am also concerned that the two men appear to have no right of appeal against the judgement. I call on the authorities of Belarus to commute these sentences immediately and to establish a formal moratorium with a view to abolition of the death penalty. This would bring Belarus into line with other European states, none of which apply the death penalty."

    23. Catherine Ashton, Vice-President of the European Commission about the trial

      Dmitry Savelau
      Campaigner

"I condemn absolutely all acts of terrorism, and my thoughts and sympathy are with the victims of the terrible attacks in Belarus and with their families.

Nevertheless, I regret that the Supreme Court decided yesterday to sentence Dzmitry Kanavalaw and Uladzislaw Kavalyow to death. I hope that their right to appeal can be fully exercised.
The European Union opposes capital punishment under all circumstances. The death penalty is considered to be a cruel and inhuman punishment, which fails to act as a deterrent and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity. I therefore urge Belarus, the only country in Europe still applying it, to join a global moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards its universal abolition."

    24. Secretary General of the Council of Europe Jagland condemns the trial

      Dmitry Savelau
      Campaigner

“I urge the Belarus authorities not to carry out the death sentences pronounced today against Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavalyou. The crime they were found guilty of was barbaric, but their punishment should not be the same. Belarus is the only country in Europe which still executes people and I would urge the authorities to introduce an immediate moratorium with a view to its ultimate abolition. The victims of the 11 April attack and their families deserve justice, not revenge".
