Triclosan is a chemical that is known to be carcinogenic. It also causes hormone disruption and antibiotic resistance.  When mixed with chlorinated water it creates a chloroform gas, which is toxic and cancer causing.  Triclosan is linked to asthma, allergies and eczema. It can be found in 60% of women's breastmilk.

In an article called Outside Job, Whole Living magazine explains how various everyday products can hurt our hormones. They listed 9 things, and number 8 was triclosan.

"Commonly Found In: antibacterial soaps, toothpastes, dishwashing liquids, and household cleaners.
The Lowdown: Any worried parent might be tempted to reduce infection rick by buying products that promise to stamp out bacteria. But most of these rely on triclosan, a chemical that's been found in animal studies to interfere with the expression of testosterone and also to affect the thyroid hormones. The US Food and Drug Administration says that the chemical is not currenlty known to be hazardous to humans, but it is i in the process of a regulatory review.
Protection Plan: Stick to soap and water, and apply a little elbow grease as needed to keep you and your house clean. "Studies show that soap and water works just as well." says Jill Blakeway, a certified acupuncturist and the founder of Manhattan's YinOva Cent

    2. Redbook Articles Denounces Triclosan!

      Rachel Muller

Redbook had an article titled "9 Health Risks That Aren't Worth Taking". Number 6 said this: "Certain antibacterial soaps and toothpastes. Triclosan is a germ killer found in a lot of antibacterial hand soaps, body washes, and even some cavity control toothpaste. But the American Medical Association recommends AGAINST the use of triclosan in our homes, because it may encourage the development of scary bacteria that are resistant to anti-biotics. (For more on superbugs, read our in depth report on page 148.) 'Studies have shown that these triclosan products don't work any better than regular cleansers or toothpaste, but they damage the environment and potentially place our long-term health at risk.' says Susan Shaw, Ph.D., an environmental scientist at the State University of New York, Albany. Not sure whether triclosan lurks in your favorite products? Just check the labels."

Because after I used my new sweet-smelling body wash, I was itching for days and had to get rid of the stuff.

We love BBW soaps! But why must it do us harm when it's unnecessary? Beautiful packaging, lovely scents, all it needs it to omit the triclosan and we're all set!
