    1. We Did It, L.A.!

We did it L.A.! In a historic vote today, June 18, 2013, the City Council moved Los Angeles one step closer to becoming the largest city in the United States to ban plastic carryout bags. With dozens of supportive community members in attendance at the hearing, the Council voted 11-1 to advance an ordinance that would ban plastic carryout bags and place a charge on paper bags at grocery stores and select retailers throughout the city. Banning plastic bags will reduce the littering of plastic bags, which biodegrade very slowly and are made of processed oil, which is destructive to natural habitats that it flies to, like bodies of water.

I live in Venice and the large amount of plastic debris on the beach and in the ocean is a persistent threat to birds and sealife. Please join the County and other local cities to ban the bag. Plastic debris is not a legacy we want to leave for future Angelenos.

Reducing the number of plastic bags in the city of Los Angeles would greatly reduce the amount of trash that reaches the ocean. Thousands of sea creatures die every year from ingesting plastic.
