B.C. needs to provide emergency mental health services for children

British Columbia hospitals need to start providing in-patient emergency mental health services for children in crisis, when they are self-harming, harming their family, are suicidal, or in other forms of distress.  At the moment hospitals are sending away families and children in crisis who are having crisis mental health episodes. This is a serious gap in critical care in B.C. that must be recognized.

Our 11 year old adopted daughter has bi-polar.  Last week we had to call the police to help us get her to the hospital because she was in a crisis. She was kept in a hospital safe room for four days but then was sent home despite still being extremely unstable. 20 hours later we had to call the police again, and the hospital told us to take her home. 2 days later she was taken again to Emergency and was discharged before we even arrived. Our daughter begged hospital staff to let her stay because she knew she needed the help, but every time we were turned away.

When did severe mental health problems stop being a medical problem? Where are these fragile children supposed to go for immediate help if the hospital says to go home? There are many families in our position. We know we aren't the only ones dealing with this crisis. We, as a society, are failing our fragile kids and we will be damned if our daughter falls through the cracks!

We are pleading to anyone who will listen. There needs to be a unit at the hospital for children in mental health crisis. Somewhere families can go with their children in crisis and get immediate, safe, inpatient care until they are stable or until another hospital has an opening.

We are pleading you to say you're not OK with the lack of services for our society's most fragile children. Share this, email it, tweet it, forward to everyone. Please help us change this!

Ministries team up to improve services for children with mental-health problems

Health and child welfare officials have agreed to work together on a three-year plan to improve services for a growing number of children and youth with mental-health problems on Vancouver Island. It's the first time officials from two government ministries have agreed to develop a joint plan, although they have been co-operating for years.

Follow the link. This is EXACTLY why we are fighting for emergency mental health services for kids across BC! Hayden's suicide is 1 to many. Youth in crisis warrants appropiate, inpatient emergency crisis intervention and stabalization, regardless of the number or where they live. 1 is too many!

Desperate families face long waits for help in B.C.'s mental-health system, experts say - Local - Times Colonist

Greater Victoria families struggling to get help for children and youth with serious mental illnesses highlight serious gaps in the system across B.C., child advocates and mental health experts say. Young people can wait months for mental-health services in some parts of the province, while others cycle through emergency departments and pediatric wards without ever getting the treatment they need, advocates say.

We have received so many personal emails from people sharing their stories and heartache by our Emergency Mental Health system. I would like to share one I just received by a supporter.
"I have had two kids in the mental health system, wait until they get into the adult system... it will be shocking... my 25 year old son thinks animals talk to him , people read his minds, he on over 10 meds... constantly asks for help, is depressed, wants to die. when i call the police they take him to the hospital , over 4 times this christmas.... keep him in for about 4 days. ive lost my house, my friends, my family. its unbelievable. I dont know what else to do.he lives like an animal in a trailer. we need to mobilize as a society and push for help. the case manger has never called him. this child mental health system is just the beginning, often their is a family stigma. they just blame the kids mental health on the families.its archaic."

Mental health issues is one of the biggest problems we face today in modern society. We need to put more funding and attention to both teenagers and adults who are depressed, suicidal, or who have other mental issues that require attention.

Having dealt with mental illness in the family, I know how important a good medical support system is. Nobody should be turned away or made to feel inadequate to save time or space. It makes things worse.
