Mad Max is an important part of Australian cinema and pop-culture history. However, the series is as equally important worldwide, and is arguably one of the most recognisable and referenced post-apocalyptic tales ever told. The titular hero, Max, was played by Mel Gibson whose Australian heritage came across as a gruff, stoic and hardened portrayal of a man who'd lost everything, but still had a sense of hope.

Avalanche Studios has, however, chosen to have Max voiced by a "generic" American voice-actor so that Max can appeal to a "generic" crowd. This negates the hero's place in popular-culture and is a bit of an affront to Australians who hold the character and movies so dear (and also to global purists).

We're not asking for Mel Gibson, but finding an Australian voice-actor who can channel the Max of the popular films would just be the right -- and reverent -- thing to do.

Please Avalanche, have a heart and give us the Max we all love.

    2. Success! Max will have an Aussie accent

Thanks to the ruckus we kicked up on here, the various mainstream media coverage that occurred and to vocal fans who took the cause directly to Avalanche's Facebook and Twitter accounts, the studio has announced that we "have been heard" and that Max would sport and Australian accent.

"Attn. fans who want Max to have an Aussie accent in #MadMaxGame : It shall be so. We admire your loyalty. You have been heard," Tweeted Avalanche's CEO, Christofer Sundberg.

While this is not a guarantee that the voice-actor will be specifically Australian, it's still a step in the right direction. We'll be keeping a close eye on the development and will hopefully chat with Avalanche about this decision moving forward, so please stay tuned to AusGamers.com for Mad Max videogame related news in the future.

A massive thanks to Australians and everyone else in the world who supported this petition and helped our collective voices be heard.

    4. More to Come, Keep Spreading the Word

Since beginning this petition we've been covered across a multitude of gaming sites such as IGN, VG247 and Blues News. We've also had big shoutouts on Facebook from our friends at places like Gameplanet and Official PlayStation Magazine Australia. And more recently we've been covered on news.com.au, The Age and spoke with ABC Radio Broken Hill, where the second film was actually shot.

We're not stopping there though. We plan on reaching out to more and more mainstream press in the coming days and weeks and will also be reaching out to Avalanche Studios themselves for more discussion on the topic. In the meantime, if you have any questions at all, or have any suggestions for us, please email: stephen@ausgamers.com.

And once again, thanks for all your support thus far.

Max is an Aussie - its not simply a matter of his accent, its the cultural source of the character & the setting. Don't neuter the game.

Mad Max was an Aussie Franchise. Mel Gibson is an American. Since the movie was Australian, the game should be Australian. I don't care if Max's new ride is a Mustang, but it should have Sam Worthington or Daniel Craig portray Max.

Having seen both the original and the dubbed versions of the first movie, the addition of American accents turned it from being a unique film into just another generic post-holocaust road movie...

Glad to hear of the success of the petition! This is brilliant news, and well done for getting all the exposure it needed.

I for one would have been solely disappointed if playing the game for the first time, knowing nothing could be done to alter the accent of Mad Max.

Comparable to when i saw Pacific Rim, with an American portraying an Aussie character (with the worst possible accent cross-over), i would be yelling at the screen telling him to shut the hell up!
