Increase the Education Tax Refund for homeschooling families.

    1. Petition by

Homeschooling families often survive off a single income, but still have to pay all of their education expenses out of their own pocket. The government budgets between $6 991 and $11 591 for the education of each schoolchild per year, plus the Education Tax Refund. Homeschooling families also pay tax and are providing quality education for their children. As such, they should be able to claim ALL of their educational expenses for tax purposes with the Education Tax Refund. This will ensure greater financial equity between homeschooling families and the rest of society, and enable homeschooling families to continue educating their children to a high standard.

Public and private schools both receive government funding. Parents who take the initiative to provide tailored education to their own children (effectively being very small private schools!) should also be eligible for such funding. I have paid substantial taxes over the past 18 years (and my husband is still paying taxes), and now that we are raising a child, our son's education should be eligible for the same government funding as everyone else's.

I home school as a result of need rather than lifestyle choice. In our semi -rural community the government fails to provide adequate support for special needs children,

the result being my two children spent 5 years in the mainstream system & left the system 4 years behind their grade level.

After 1 year with homeschooling we are closing the gap, and are another year away from them being at their grade level. I feel we are entitled to some of the financial assistance given to schools for each of their pupils, to help run our program & supplement all the costs associated with educating in the home. I gave up a career & weekly pay check to educate my children as the state school system failed to do so.

If private schools can get government assistance, then why not homeschooling?

Because I believe that I should be penalised because I want, what is best for my children.
