Ask for/Give donations in lieu of gifts this holiday season!

I live in Missouri and fall is right around the corner which got me to thinking about the holidays. Love the holidays, hate the gift giving.... stressful, expensive, wasteful, and anti-climatic. In recent years I have begun making donations to nonprofits in the names of friends and family instead of giving them gifts (90% of which end up in the landfill by June anyway). You can get your holiday shopping done in 30 minutes and no need to wrap presents!

So, today I created a Fundraising Network on Change.org called "All I want for the holidays is a donation made to WildAid!":

http://www.change.org/giving_networks/index/175

I plan on sending around the link to family and friends letting them know that it is not necessary to give me a gift this year (I have everything I need and then some), but if they still want to give a gift, I will suggest that they make the donation through the Change.org Fundraising Network instead.

If you feel the way I do about the mass consumerism and wasteful of holiday gift giving, then you can create a Change.org Fundraising Networkt here:

THANKS!

There is no better way to tell a friend or family member how much you love them than by making a gift to a nonprofit organization in their name.

This Diwali (the festival of lights) I donated a 75 kgs of wheat-flour for the 'langar' community kitchen. That is just enough to make bread for all their 'guests' for one meal.... but then between all the donors the community kitchen never lets anyone go hungry who comes calling...

Its a kind of reminder to my son that we have social responsibilities.

The amount of wasteful spending that goes on in this country is sickening. I've been donating instead of spending money on frivolous gifts for several years now. If more people did this for the holidays, birthdays, weddings, etc, there would be so much more funding for non-profit programs. It's nice to know that at least a few people share my opinion.

I gave my grandaughter Hailey(age 6), 10 flocks of chicks through Heifer International.

I gave myself a water buffalo, and gave my wife Lynn, two goats.

I plan to do this each year at Christmas time.

On sixty minutes twice this year they had a program about a man who invented a computer that he wants to have in the hands of every child in the world. Now they have it available to citizens in the USA.

How it works is you can now buy one for yourself and give one to a child. It is the best present I can think of and the lap top was a higher quality than Leslie Stahl's who did the piece and hers was worth $3600. This is only available until December 31, 2007. check out this new program from OLPC : http://www.laptopgiving.org

This is the way all the world should work with everything....
