We want a traditional school calendar year that the majority of the USA adopts,  starting school after Labor Day & ending in June. As the US education is increasingly challenged with low performances & slipping standards  why is the district making it harder for kids to succeed in school? The current schedule, starting school during THE hottest time of the year, in no way optimizes the time students are in school learning.  August is the hottest month of the summer &  August 2011 we experienced the highest temperatures in decades. We know  this is a trend. High summer temperatures in school lead to poor concentration & focus. The classrooms are sweltering! The cost of energy to keep schools cool enough for students to stay focused & concentrate is cost prohbitive. With budget cuts, it's even more challenging. This last May, we had brisk, stormy weather through the beginning of June. This is also a consistent trend. Students do not need to be released from school in May, before Memorial Day, a full month before summer officially starts. Can we please have our summers back?! Summer starts in June, not May. It is better for student’s summers. It is better for families. Every one we talked to in the district, including staff, teachers, parent & students do not like this schedule. We need to give our children & teachers the best chance for success in the classrooms and schools. We need to utilize every tool we can to help our education system. August is too hot to be in school. May is too cool to be on summer break.

Sincerely, Gea Franklin mother of two in BVSD

http://www.bvsdlistens.com/ BVSD is eager to hear from you all. They have set up a website with many issues, including the calendar one we are so passionate about. PLEASE sign on and COMMENT and ENCOURAGE everyone you know who wants their voice heard to sign on and COMMENT. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. The current school calendar is NOT conducive to optimal learning. Ending school in May, a month before Summer officially, and starting school during the hottest time of the entire year with no A/C or relief is antithesis to optimizing every day our kids and teachers are in school. We need to help our students reach their brightest and best potentials, and this is just one very tangible way to champion them and better education in the USA. It will help teachers and students and families. It is in our hands to encourage the district to listen to us. This is what we have been fighting for almost two years. Now is the time to PLEASE sign!

    5. How does everyone feel about starting school August 15?

      Gea Franklin
      Petition Organizer

We still have some of our hottest days ahead with August being the hottest month of the year. The weather patterns show that we are indeed experiencing climate change and have had records set for hottest days ever in the US & worldwide. With records also showing American education slipping further down year after year, a downward spiral is being created as we watch. Let's get involved a make a positive change to our children's education experience. My goal is to optimize my children's education. BVSD's schedule is not helping. The current schedule starts during the hottest time of the year when summer is in full swing & ends in May, this next year we get out even earlier, on May 24. Are you happy about that? Summer is June 21 - Sept 21. Can we find common ground & create a better situation for our children & the teachers in the classroom? Typically, staff are in airconditioned offices & don't feel the sweltering heat that causes heat exhaustion & unfocused students & extra challenges.

    6. Snow in BVSD district the last day of school!

In Nederland, we woke to snow this last day of school 2012! And we started school in August with 90'+ temps! Something is very wrong with this picture! Yes, we have school in Nederland, but many of our local kids attend school in Boulder too. We need the schedule to change. Please sign and pass this on!

"On that same note, dismissing students before Memorial Day makes no sense at all either. BVSD is out of sync with an optimal schedule for learning as well as family vacations. If BVSD is trying to create a "summer vacation" summer actually starts June 21, not May 26! It is often cold, rainy and can even snow in May. This is a horrendous schedule. We will continue to pressure the district to make choices to optimize our kids' educational environments rather than what the current schedule does, hinder it.

Your serious attention to this essential topic is needed. I would like the addresses of the current school board so we can bring this up to them as well.

Thank you for your time and attention."

Please write your letter. Get folks to sign. Put pressure on the district!

    8. Excerpt from letter to BVSD superintendent Bruce Messinger

"We want this to be addressed in a serious, real way. Simply mitigating the overheated buildings during the hottest time of the year is merely putting a band-aid on a serious issue that needs a more thoughtful, corrective approach. With our public school systems failing left & right, high school graduation at an all time low, & Americans students underperforming in every area it is time to re-think how we approach the school calendar to optimize the students to perform their very best when they are in school. Having students & teachers in HOT classrooms during the hottest time of the year is counter-productive to optimizing learning. It is a tremendous distraction for good learning environments, resulting in poor concentration and focus. I think it is time we put our KIDS FIRST & figure out how to maximize their learning environments. School becomes pure torture when kids & teachers are experiencing heat exhaustion & overheating on a daily basis." MORE to come... see next post.

Please sign if you have not signed. Please also get like-minded folks to sign the petition too. We are about to end school May 26, a month before summer actually starts. Our kids will once again be in OVERHEATED classroom and schools come August 16!!! How does this optimize learning?
Email or call Bruce Messinger and let him know your thoughts on this. We need everyone who wants this change to participate and let BVSD know we are serious and want a better solution to HOT classrooms, school and heat exhausted students than what they proposed to simply mitigate the hot classrooms with whatever measures they are proposing. We need to let the school board know too!

    10. Why is BVSD not listening to its parents?

      Gea Franklin
      Petition Organizer

After the extremely disappointing news that BVSD will NOT consider a later start to next school year, due to a few disgruntled teachers, I feel very strongly that the rules of engagement need to change.
Starting school mid-August, the hottest time of the entire year, does not maximize anyone's educational experience. The tremendous cost to cool schools does not mitigate the experience of being in school (and outside at recesses) during these dreadfully hot days. We, as parents, know how to keep our kids cool and managed during the summer months, as Dr. Messinger suggested one of the methods we use to keep our children cool at school. Not being in school during these hottest days & weeks of school is part of what we know to be the best solution. Lately, it seems we are here to serve BVSD. The conversation needs to change. We, the parents, are the customer. BVSD, we want our customer service.

The conversation must change. BVSD is here to serve our children & has a responsibility to act when, we the customer/the parent, speaks up, demanding a solution to a schedule that does not in any way optimize our children's education, furthermore puts them in harm's way with overheated buildings & scorching playgrounds. May I ask? "How is that productive?" "Who benefits?" "Certainly, not the students. As parents, we are the MAJORITY stakeholders in our children's educations. We, the tax payers, pay the salaries of the public school district, including the teachers. We are the customers. We demand the highest quality of customer service & ACCOUNTABILITY. BVSD needs to understand these basic tenets and act accordingly.BVSD & its teachers & staff need to treat every day they teach & serve our children, as a Blessed Day. BVSD & its teachers are public servants. Our children, their education, safety and welfare is top priority, creating the most optimized environment.

We need to let the district know how we feel about this unequivocally. It is not a good learning environment. And if they crank the AC, that is a huge energy suck. Can we adopt a more forward thinking approach? We can do it!

Great timing. Boulder County is experiencing a very hot August, which is always hot. The classrooms are sweltering in the 80's & 90's for upstairs classes!!! While the offices & staff have AC. How can this be good for optimizing learning?

It is ridiculous for our kids to bake in the heat of August when the schools are completely unprepared to deal with the heat. Adjusting the schedule as proposed makes absolute sense.

Difficult to learn in HOT classrooms. Saves money on energy bills for schools. Students can work in the tourist business in summer ending Labor Day.

The timing of the traditional school year works better with the weather patterns. It is cooler at the end of May/beginning of June and very hot in mid August. Changing the school year would decrease the energy BVSD uses for climate control.
