Ask American Airlines to cancel anti-vaccination message

      Melbourne, Australia, Australia

American Airlines is planning to run disproved and dangerous anti-vaccination propaganda from The Australian Vaccination Network (AVN), via it's in-flight "Executive Report" media and "American Way" magazine, from July to August.

Citing fraudulent research, the material contains claims that vaccines cause autism, a false claim that whooping cough vaccination "is not working" having caused "a much more deadly disease", and wrongly suggests this is already happening with measles, mumps and potentially other diseases. Passengers are then directed to the AVN website.

A 2010 investigation into the AVN by the Health Care Complaints Commission of New South Wales resulted in findings that the AVN website:
1) Provides information that is solely anti-vaccination.
2) Contains information that is incorrect and misleading.
3) Quotes selectively from research to suggest that vaccination may be dangerous.

With no scientific backing or qualified staff the AVN lobby against the Australian Government successful "Immunise Australia" program. Their website provides step by step instructions on how to complete and have signed a Conscientious or Medical Objection to vaccination form, which they provide.

Whilst clearly promoting an "informed choice" against vaccination they state: "...the AVN disclaims any and all responsibility for that choice."

International travel is a primary means by which vaccine preventable diseases are spread. By allowing misinformation that is against all medical advice on disease prevention American Airlines is complicit in denying it's passengers full protection under health and safety. High levels of whooping cough and accompanying infant fatalities in Australia and the USA are linked to low immunisation levels.

The CDC reported the highest number of measles cases in 15 years for 2011. 90% were imported. 86% were unvaccinated or of unknown vaccination status. The CDC also fears the USA is at risk of a measles outbreak as travellers return from the London Olympics. By perpetuating the myth that vaccination is linked to autism, American Airlines is compounding a most serious public health issue.

I note that after a similar situation Delta Airlines reviewed approval processes for in-flight material. I would urge American Airlines to do the same.

    2. American Airlines will not air or publish AVN material

      Dear supporters,

As is well known by now, AA have confirmed they won't be admitting AVN material into print or to air on their business channel.

I've also received acknowledgement from Media Relations that "The interview will not be appearing on our aircraft", which is the added confirmation I really wanted.

The significance to public health, passenger safety and disability rights can't be overstated.

I hope AA review their approval processes so that proper vetting keeps potentially lethal misinformation from ever making it to producers and editors who they employ for in-flight media.

Again, thanks for your help in making this possible and a special thanks to those who went the extra mile.

      Paul Gallagher,
      Melbourne Australia.

    4. American Airlines tweet agreement to not run antivax material

      Paul Gallagher

American Airlines have tweeted their intention to not run the Executive Report or publish the American Way in-flight magazine containing Meryl Dorey's anti-vaccination misinformation. This would appear to be a wonderful step taken by American Airlines in the interests of passenger safety, disability rights and public health.
We welcome the decision and thank American Airlines for the announcement-by-twitter.
However as keen as I am to close this petition it will remain active until confirmation is absolute - and I'm sure American Airlines can email me via my profile here or by replying through Customer Relations.
Of course, AA can do much better. The response to initial concerns was that listening is "optional". Now I understand and indeed accept that the material had not as yet been submitted to AA.
AA would be making a sound business decision to consider the path chosen by Delta Airlines in changing the approval process so that such material doesn't make production at all.

@lizditz from I Speak of Dreams has produced 5 pre addressed letters to primary identities regarding the decision to air the AVN message.

You can download, edit and send them off at your leisure. [See link below]

      They're addressed to:

      1) Altitude Media - producers of the in-flight message
      2) Senior Corporate officers of american Airlines
      3) Editor and publisher of American Way - American Airlines in-flight magazine
      4) American Airlines Investor Relations, and
      5) American Airlines Media Relations.

      Thanks for you support.

Great stuff guys. It would be awesome to lift the goal total. Keep on promoting the petition and we can lift awareness that American Airlines has been duped into scheduling misinformation that's contrary to Australian, USA, Canadian and European health authorities.

A fantastic start to petitioning for a very important cause.
As Dr. Norman Swan tweeted yesterday: "If true then American Airlines is a party to potential child deaths".
Regrettably it really is that serious, given the necessity of pertussis vaccination at present. Whilst only 5% of 0-4 year olds in Australia aren't fully vaccinated for whooping cough, they make up almost 30% of notified infectious cases.
Thanks to all the wonderful supporters out there.
      - Paul.

This is irresponsibility of the highest order. Measles cases have quadrupled over the past year because of uninformed idiots like this woman. I'll be flying other airlines until this is fixed.

Really, WTF AA? You wouldn't publish hate speech or things pushing violence, so clearly you understand there are limits, it's not just "somebody's opinion". Just because you're Texas based doesn't get you a free pass on rational thinking. Don't run this...

I'm signing because the promotion of false and misleading anti-vaccination propoganda is against everything the medical community promotes. I won't ever choose to fly with AA if they continue to promote anti-vaccination when all evidence shows vaccinations to be necessary for mankind.
