•Tuckahoe students are being denied the important educational opportunity of learning a second language at an early age. 13 out of 22 Arlington elementary schools have this opportunity, including nearby schools such as McKinley, Jamestown, Ashlawn and Glebe.
•Arlington Public Schools recognizes the benefit of second language instruction for all APS students, and has said that "[a]ll APS students should be proficient in at least two languages upon graduation and should have access to world language proficiency programs regardless of school of attendance."
•Tuckahoe parents have overwhelmingly supported bringing FLES to their school since 2005 and reiterate their support with this petition.
•Tuckahoe parent tax dollars fund FLES for other kids in Arlington while Tuckahoe parents are forced to pay high fees to expose their kids to a second language through enrichment programs offered for limited time periods after school hours.
•Issues such as space constraints, teacher planning time, and early release have been solved by current FLES schools and should not derail the educational mission and stated goals of APS or place Tuckahoe students at an academic disadvantage.
As parents, we ask that our children not be denied the benefits of FLES for yet another school year. Please fund and implement FLES at Tuckahoe Elementary School for the 2013-14 school year.
