Judge Jacqueline Hatch should step down for unjust sex abuse case

Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer Robb Gary Evans was found guilty of sexual abuse on July 2, 2012 by a jury of his peers. The highway patrolman put his hand up the skirt of a bar patron and fondled her genitals after drinking 8 beers and driving to the bars. Upon sentencing Mr. Evans received no jail time and was not even required to register as a sex offender. He walked out of the courtroom with 2 years probation. Upon sentencing Judge Jacqueline Hatch of the Coconino County Superior Court stated to the victim, "If you wouldn’t have been there that night, none of this would have happened." She advised the victim to be more vigilant, “ You learned a lesson about friendship and a lesson about vulnerability.” This injustice cannot be tolerated, and without collective action of the people, these incidents will only continue.

Please sign this petition in defense of sexual abuse victims and to force Judge Hatch to step down before overseeing another sexual assault case. No more victims should be blamed for the egregious misconduct of sexual perpetrators or the abuse of power by public officials.

This includes 720 residents of Flagstaff, a significant proportion of our total voting population (18,000 votes cast in 2010, or 4%)! You all are amazing, and a tribute to the bravery of the victim. I want to thank everyone for the immense support we have seen. The victim's only request after Officer Evans was sentenced was an apology from Judge Hatch, and you all helped to make that happen. We are by no means done, but I am proud that we succeeded in fulfilling that request. This forum, the activists and the organizations in Flagstaff fighting for the cause are producing results that we all can be proud of. THANK YOU ALL!!!

Too little, too late Judge Hatch. Your true colors came out in the courtroom and you can never again be trusted as an objective justice. Either you step down or you will be forced down.

I am so very proud of the support we have seen in the last 24 hours, with 2,400 people having signed the petition! People from across the globe are gathering to defend the victim and standing for women’s rights everywhere. The bravery the victim has shown in standing up to a police officer and speaking out against the injustice Judge Hatch has shown is a model for us to follow. She felt it her duty to prevent this from happening to others, and it is our duty as citizens of the world to be sure these occurrences do not go unnoticed or undefended.

To the victim: We hope you can feel the support that nations of people have come together to show you, that you can find a light at the end of the tunnel and once again feel safe in your community. Thank you for setting such an amazing example.

Take a look at the latest article from the AZ Daily Sun. The victim is extremely level-headed in her response. Her bravery is amazing and it is obvious she cares more about preventing this from occurring to others than she does for her own case.

You can notice too that our public outcry is being noticed. "Hatch’s comments have generated a stir online, where members of the public and an online petition have called for her to resign." We are doing it! Thank you all again for the support!

We have hit 100 signatures in just over 3 hours! I want to thank everyone for their support. We hope to bring justice and prevent the recurrence of these events. Judges across the nation need be aware they are accountable to the people, and will be held responsible if they are not. We the people can make this world just by speaking out. Please share with others and let’s keep up the momentum!

      Thank you very much!

This judge obviously has no idea what justice is about. Those entrusted with power such as the police should not be abusing it, especially with the support of the state. This judge seems to not understand that.

A person in her position of power should know better than to blame the victim of sexual assault. Clearly her judgment is not sufficient to do her job. She should be removed from her position.

Its absolutely a case of a judge making an exception for someone because of their social status/position. It is an unfair and unjust action, and the results of the action demand that the judge step down.
