Quite simply women should have the right to choose how and where they give birth. 'The freedom in a country can be measured by the freedom of birth' (Agnes Gereb, currently serving a jail sentence for assisting women in Hungary to give birth at home) Midwives are being persecuted in numerous European countries including Hungary, Lithuania & Czech Republic and Amnesty International Europe are yet to intervene. Please sign this petition to urge Amnesty to get involved and defend these women who are being prosecuted purely for doing their job: helping women give birth.

I had home births for my 2 children born in 1994 and 1995 in France and was supported by a wonderful mid-wife who latter had to face legal problems. It is fundamental for women to have the choice of a powerful birth without being medically controlled.

I am a midwife in the UK and feel that a woman's right to have children or not have children and to give birth how and where she wants, are fundamental to her human rights. Midwives being allowed to do the job that they have been trained to do, are essential in protecting this human right.

As a licensed midwife, mother and grandmother I firmly believe in all womens rights to have a trained midwife at her side during childbirth, regardless of where the woman chooses to give birth. A woman seeking a home birth obviously has reasons to do so, among these reasons the flagrant disrespect of women, their babies and their partners in obstetrical settings in many countries. I shall never forget the happiness of a couple from a country where obstetrical care is far removed from the values parents wish to see respected. After a quick and uncomplicated delivery I handed the couples new-born daughter, cord still attached, to the father, who never before had been allowed to present and to be a support for his wife when their two previous children were born. He held her briefly, tears streaming down his cheeks, before placed their daughter in her mothers arms. (Swedish hospital setting). Parents choice, even in hospital privacy, warmth and respect will be maintained where women´s choices are placed foremost.

Because i know personally Agnes, who helped thousands of women with all her competence that should be valued greatly, instead of what is happening to her in Hungary at the moment.

I respect your rights to your own laws, but not to make criminals of decent human beings.
