Allow CNMs to Attend Nebraska's Home Births! Support LB 712!

    2. Petition by

      Nebraska Friends of Midwives

The passage of this bill will strike from Nebraska statutes the words that currently make attending a home birth a felony for Certified Nurse-Midwives.

Nebraska and Alabama are the only two states which criminalize this service. The 48 other states, Puerto Rico, and Canada all take advantage of this option rather than prohibit it.

In the past five years 413 babies have be born at home in Nebraska- none of these parents have had the option to hire a licensed care provider to attend them at home.

It is imperative that Nebraska's legislators understand that Nebraska's home births deserve access to, not protection from Certified Nurse-Midwives.

In less than a day and a half this petition has garnered 525 signatures. It was so encouraging to wake up this morning to see that 100 individuals had signed overnight. Nebraska Friends of Midwives increased its petition goal from 500 to 600 around noon, and has realized that it is time to adjust again!

When we began the petition we thought 500 would be a stretch, but we stand corrected.

Our new goal is 1000 signatures. Please continue to share the petition and to tell others that this change is important to you.

As one of LB 712's supporters shared on her Facebook wall: "Signing this does not mean you have children, you want to have children, you want a home birth, or you want to use/have used midwifery care. Signing this just means that you believe that women in Nebraska should be able have a highly trained at their births IF they choose to give birth at home."

Home birth in Nebraska needs access to, not protection from Certified Nurse-Midwives.

I want to give birth in my home-- safely. Having a licensed midwife present isn't more dangerous---not having one there could be. I acknowledge I may have to go to the hospital if something urgent arises, but I have the SAME set of options at the only birthing center in town, too.

Women should have the freedom to chose their own care. Has the government or medicine EVER been wrong in the past? What makes us think we are free from errors in thinking today? Allow women, not government, to decide what is appropriate medical care.

It is the right of women to make an informed decision on where their babies are born

I'm an LVN working on earning my BSN and eventually my MSN so I can become a CNM. The fact that Nebraska and Alabama have made it illegal for midwives to assist with home births seriously bothers me. The lack of training available to persons attempting home births in these states is making this very dangerous.
