Please show your support for the independent shops in our seaside town

    1. Petition by

      Naomi Tarry

      United Kingdom

Hello,

The beautiful Suffolk Coast seaside town of Aldeburgh is currently facing threats to its unique and special character from major national retailers such as Tesco.   We currently have a wonderful independent business community and if we lose that, we erode away at Aldeburgh’s unique identity.

Independent shops are the lifeblood of Aldeburgh’s local economy.  Money spent at our independent shops stays in our community because it is recycled locally. Research shows that money spent in independent shops circulates on average three times within a local community, where as money spent in national or international chains leaves our local economy quicker.

Aldeburgh’s independent shops and service providers support community projects. Without support from independent shops and service providers the Aldeburgh Business Association and its members would not be able to organise events such as the Aldeburgh Proms by the Sea, Hanging Baskets and the annual Christmas Lights.

Finally we wish to thank our customers for supporting us and shopping with us…without you we wouldn’t have a wonderful town to support.

Kind regards,

Naomi Tarry

Chair of the Aldeburgh Business Association

East of England Businesswoman Entrepreneur of the Year 2011-2012

    3. Tesco: planning application for a convenience store submitted

      Naomi Tarry
      Petition Organizer

Hello, and first of all, thank you for signing our petition.

Pigeon Developments has submitted their planning application for a new convenience store in the pretty seaside town of Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast. The proposed store will be a Tesco Express and we feel strongly it will take trade away from the High Street and make it hard for independent retailers to compete.

Independent retailers contribute significant funds to community events such as the Aldeburgh Carnival, Christmas Lights, Proms by the Sea and many other events. Lose our independent retailers and these events will be badly hit.

Help us keep our High Street special and unique by sending your objection to Suffolk Coastal District Council by 14th September. Email your objection to: d.c.admin@suffolkcoastal.co.uk including the application number C/12/1700, your name, address and reasons for objection.

      Thank you for your support!

    11. Public meeting to discuss Tesco's proposals for an Aldeburgh store

      Naomi Tarry
      Petition Organizer

There's a public meeting hosted by Aldeburgh Town Council on Wednesday 11th July at 7pm in the Jubilee Hall for Aldeburgh residents to say what they think about Tesco's proposals for a shop at the Crossway Garage roundabout site. Tesco says that it won't attend any public meetings about their plans, so we'll be discussing it without them.

If you live in Aldeburgh, please come along and show your support for Aldeburgh's unique and special character. (Please note, we've been informed that only people on the electoral role in Aldeburgh will be allowed to speak at the meeting.)

Many thanks for your support of our special seaside town.

Because the independent retailers in Aldeburgh don't deserve for their custom to be taken away by Tesco!

Independent shops/businesses are vital to the local economy among other reasons for their existence.. if this question is asked it shows that we need to put an educational system in place to disseminate facts about their importance.

Aldeburgh is a very beautiful and special town. We must be allowed to have the choice of where we shop, not be dictated to by the corporate chains. It is a very important part of our culture. Aldeburgh will thrive because of uniqueness.
