Unchain dogs in Alamance County, Pass anti-tethering bill

    1. Petition by

Laws for Paws: Animal Welfare Investigations

The act of "chaining" or "tethering" dogs causes major psychological damage and is physcially detrimental to the dog. The chaining of dogs is cruel , inhumane and often dangerous and needs to be banned within our county.

The owner of a chained dog unknowingly increases the possibility of their dog becoming a threat to county and residents. A chained dog often becomes aggressive and is at a higher risk of being attacked by another dog, and the chain makes the dog defenseless. The dog goes into fight or flight mode and without choice the dog must fight. When a dog is confined to a chain, they are forced to eat, sleep, urinate, and defecate in the same area, which goes against their natural instincts.  These dog are very often unaltered and unvaccinated, producing even more unwanted animals and posing threats to humans. These dogs get loose, bite other animals and humans, and end up in shelters.

If Alamance County has a law that bans the "chaining" or "tethering" of dogs, then our county will be a safer place, lowering the possibility of having a vicious dog running loose in our streets, having less unwanted and homeless animals, decrease the high number of animals within our shelters and force pet owners to become responsible for their animals.

Many counties surrounding Alamance County have passed bans on the chaining, tethering and tying of dogs. This is overdue in our County as well.

Please sign the petition supporting legislation and changes that will help chained dogs in Alamance County, NC.

Anti-tethering ban in Alamance County, progressing along!!

March 17th will be the day that Laws for Paws Animal Welfare Investigations goes before the Alamance County Commissioners to talk about an anti-tethering ban being passed in the county. After working dozens of chained dog cases, I cannot stress how badly this law is needed for these chained animals.

    6. Saving Grace

The dog in the picture was first reported by a concerned neighbor in Burlington. Laws for Paws began an investigation and took this picture of her. It was cold and raining, she was matted and filthy and could only stand on the piece of wood and cry as I talked to her. She is partially blind and 13 years old. After speaking with the owners, they agreed to surrender her to me and made the comment that they were just basically waiting for her to die.
Grace was taken to be vaccinated, groomed, and assessed on her health. She was not current on her rabies or any other vaccinations and is heartworm positive.
Grace's story enraged many animal lovers within Alamance County. How could anyone let this senior girl suffer for so many years? What can be done for other animals in similar situations? What laws do we need to stop this?
The answer is that Alamance County needs an anti-tethering ban and needs it now!! For Grace and all the other dogs like her, let's make this happen!!!!

"Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." Albert Einstein

"We must fight against the spirit of conscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace." Albert Schweitzer, Born January 14, 1875

Would you deny your other family members, love, warmth & affection? Then don't deny your dog what you seek for yourself! Only prejudice allows us to deny others the rights that we expect to have for ourselves. Whether it's based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or species, prejudice is morally unacceptable.

Tethering should be a punishment to fit the crime itself. If you do it to a living creature, it should be ok to do to you....that's if I ruled the world. Since I don't, punishment needs to be harsh and bills need to be passed. This is slavery at its best. Good luck to everyone who helps these helpless creatures.
