Originally this group was founded in 2011 with the name People Against The Atrocities Committed By Japanese Whalers. The
group was formed to bring to the public’s attention the atrocities committed by Japan each year from their “research” whaling activities in the Antarctic to the slaughter of over 20,000 dolphins in Taiji. Shortly after the group began to address several new pressing issues including the slaughter of Cape Fur Seals in Namibia, the killing of 100 million sharks each year for there fins, the killing of thousands of Pilot Whales in the Faroe Islands, the fight against the plans to construct a gas hub in the pristine waters off James Price Point, Australia, and the fight against the US Navy and big oil companies over the use of powerful sonar near whales and dolphins. After learning that it isn’t just the Japanese that are screwing up the oceans the group’s name was originally changed to People Against The Atrocities Committed Against Whales, Sharks, and Seals but shortly after the second name change it was changed again to the Ocean Protectors.
