Ocean Champions is building the political power necessary to ensure thriving coasts and oceans.
Programs
Ocean Champions is the only political voice for the oceans. We participate fully in the political process and take a non-partisan approach in working with the U.S. Congress to ensure ocean health through electoral and legislative action.
History
Ocean Champions PAC and Ocean Champions Voter Fund were launched in 2003. The Ocean Champions C4 was added in 2005.
Our electoral success is strong and growing:
- 2004: endorsed and supported 14 candidates for the House and the Senate, and 11 won
- 2006: endorsed and supported 20 and 16 won; we were also instrumental in defeating ocean enemy #1, Richard Pombo
- 2008 endorsed and supported 34 candidates, and 28 won
Though we're a young organization, our legislative record is beginning to grow:
- Played a major role in re-authorizing Magnuson-Stevens
- Our Champions Helped defeat farm bill amendment that would have led to harmful new fishing subsidies
- Key Champions shot down offshore drilling in ‘06 and ’07
- Playing leadership role in the push for new standards for protecting our oceans, including Oceans 21
