NATIONALITIES SERVICE CENTER OF PHILADELPHIA

Mission

Nationalities Service Center (NSC) is a non-sectarian, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Our mission is to help immigrants and refugees participate fully in American society.  We implement this mission by meeting four main objectives:

·    Protecting legal rights
·    Strengthening families and promoting self-sufficiency
·    Eliminating barriers caused by language and cultural difference
·    Promoting public awareness of the benefits of diversity in American society

Programs

NSC is a non-profit organization which provides social, educational, senior, interpretation and translation, and legal services to immigrants and refugees in the Philadelphia five-county area.  In 2004, NSC served 4,000 clients from over 90 countries.

Each refugee or immigrant comes to the U.S, with a unique set of needs.  NSC provides services that are geared towards helping all of them to become self-sufficient and to participate fully in American society.  These services include English language classes, immigration-related legal services, refugee resettlement services, case management, employment counseling and job placement.

History

The agency was founded in 1921 under the aegis of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) as an International Institute.  NSC formed through the efforts of a group of concerned women at the “Y”, learned from a nationals study that newly-arriving immigrant women needed help with immigration/naturalization and with the English language.  The International Institute expanded to provide serves not only for immigrant women, but also for families and displaced persons.  In 1963, the International Institute officially changed its name to the Nationalities Service Center.

Throughout NSC’s history, volunteers have been a mainstay, whether as Board members providing leadership and setting policy, or as individuals (among the thousands) who, over the years, have made many of NSC’s services possible, particularly as caseworkers and legal assistants and lawyers-in-training or as tutors and instructors contributing time, talent, skills and treasures to help newcomers make the transition from their country of origin to America.

In the 21st Century, NSC continues to provide vital service and remains a haven for many area immigrants and refugees.  NSC provides wide-ranging and interconnected services for the foreign born.  Our clients receive English training, employment placement, and resettlement services at NSC.
