Rally to Pass ACES on Capitol Hill!
Published June 25, 2009 @ 09:08AM PT
This afternoon, I joined other environmental activists at the clean energy rally in front of our nation's capitol in support of Representatives Markey and Waxman's American Clean Energy and Security Act.
The rally was a successful and well-attended. In addition to members of various environmental, conservation and labor groups, both Rep. Markey and Rep. Waxman were present to speak about the bill.
Taking an inspirational role, Rep. Markey united the troops by leading the chant: "What do we want? Clean energy jobs! When do we want them? Now!" Later Rep. Waxman provided us with an update on the current bill, underscoring that even though some concessions have been made to pass this piece of legislation, the framework and foundation of the bill still stands. He emphasized that the transition to a clean economy with this bill would only cost the average household $ 0.50 a day, based on a recent non-partisan report, despite many republicans making claims that it would cost far more than this.
The bill, nicknamed ACES, is expected to go to the House floor for a vote this Friday. Please help us get this crucial bill passed by sending a message to your representative.
With the international climate meetings in Copenhagen this coming winter, we can only hope that the U.S. will move to the forefront as a leader of new environmental policies to reduce the impacts of climate change. Now is the time to make these necessary changes; with concentrated activism on behalf of our environment, the American Clean Energy and Security Act will pass the House this week, and we will be that much closer to curbing global warming.
