End Homelessness
Oaxaca, Mexico
I was in Oaxaca, Mexico from September-December 2008. It was a joint program between CFHI and the University of California, Davis. The experience was life-changing. By rotating with local doctors in various fields of medicine, I was exposed to the patterns of treatment in the cultural, economic, and social context of Mexicans. For me, the result of the experience was an increase in cultural awareness and humility. The programs developed a drive and motivation to serve under-served Latinos in the U.S. We had classes on Binational health issues that effect Latinos in the U.S. in order to prepare pre-med students for the issues Latinos face in the U.S. in terms of health care. The goal of the program was to increase the motivation and drive to serve under-served communities at home and abroad, and I believe it was a complete success. I feel like I've been started on the path to obtaining culturally and emotionally sensitive skills that will allow me to be unique health care provider who's capable of delivering health care in an effective way. I recommend this program for anyone who wants to mature, grow, and develop cross-culture understanding that is so needed in health care. I think anyone who goes to Oaxaca will love it because there's a plethora of culture, art, and beauty.
Durban, South Africa 2007
I joined the Durban, South Africa CFHI program in August 2007. My primary goal was to gain a deeper understanding of international healthcare. CFHI arranged for me to shadow both national and international doctors in urban, suburban and rural settings. Beyond that, I was introduced to a culture I knew little about; making new friends and expanding my family. It was truly a life changing experience and I look forward to joining them again in the future.
