Mission
The mission of the American Foundation for Children with AIDS is to improve the lives of children and youth struggling with the impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. We provide cost effective relief, services, medical and social support to help these victims achieve their full life potential. Additionally, a great deal of AFCA's efforts is directed at educating the public about the AIDS pandemic through presentations, newsletters, brochures and our website.
Programs
American Foundation for Children with AIDS (AFCA) works in four program areas:
1. We provide essential anti-retroviral and chemotherapy medications (for children with AIDS and related cancers), as well as medicine to treat opportunistic diseases for children aged birth-18, their caregivers, and pregnant women who are HIV+ or who have AIDS.
2. When food is scarce, we also provide ATMIT (oat based cereal) to children and their families so they can have a complete "medicine" (drugs and food).
3. We acquire and send free medical supplies and equipment to rural clinics so that people can be treated with dignity and care
4. We educate the American population regading the AIDS pandemic through presentations, newsletters, brochures and our website.
AFCA believes that true success is achieved through collaboration with qualified local professionals. To this end, we partner with: Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda; Diocese of Mombasa in Mombasa, Kenya; Voi Children's Health Program in Voi, Kenya; St. Mary's Mission Hospitals in Nairobi and Elementita, Kenya, and with ZOE in Zimbabwe.
History
The American Foundation for Children with AIDS is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2004 to provide life-saving medications and support to children who had been forgotten for too long. Pediatric AIDS Canada and AFCA partnered to send medicine to children with Uganda and Kenya and in 2008, AFCA added Zimbabwe to the countries where we work.
