What We Do

Safe Kids Worldwide works to prevent accidental injuries and deaths to children by promoting changes in attitudes, behavior, and the environment.  By mobilizing communities on a local level, Safe Kids Worldwide conducts public education programs; facilitates engineering and environmental modifications; enacts and enforces laws and regulations; and conducts research on the effectiveness of our efforts.

Safe Kids Worldwide depends on its grassroots volunteer network that works closely with, and often includes law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, health professionals, educators, parents, businesses, and most importantly, children. Through media, educational, and public policy efforts, Safe Kids Worldwide reaches millions of children and their families with lifesaving interventions and safety messages.

Events and Programs

More than 500 Safe Kids representatives and other injury prevention professionals convene in Washington, D.C. annually for our international Leadership Conference to learn about the emerging research and technology in injury prevention and to network with professionals from all around the world who are focused on saving children’s lives.

Safe Kids Walk This Way, a child pedestrian safety initiative sponsored by FedEx, teaches pedestrian safety to schoolchildren, advocates for stronger regulations to protect child pedestrians, and collects data to identify hazardous walking routes for children.  Walk This Way is active in Brazil, Canada, China, Korea, the Philippines, and the United States and was launched in India in August 2007.  Over one million children in China have participated in the Walk This Way program since 2004.

Safe Kids Week is an annual awareness campaign sponsored by founding sponsor Johnson & Johnson in the United States, Canada, China, and Brazil.  This effort reaches millions of people to raise awareness, change behavior and advocate for public policies that prevent accidental injury and save lives.

History

Who We Are

Safe Kids Worldwide is the first and only international nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury.  Launched in 1987, Safe Kids Worldwide (formerly the National SAFE KIDS Campaign) focuses on one specific problem: Unintentional injuries kill more than 680,000 children each year worldwide and 95 percent of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.   In the U.S. and most industrialized nations, unintentional injury is a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14.

Safe Kids Worldwide has members in 17 countries, including the United States, Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Uganda, the United States, and Vietnam.
