The Council for a Livable World advocates for the ending the war in Iraq. The Council endorses and helps fundraise for congressional candidates who show intent to withdraw U.S. troops from the Iraq. Currently, the Council has endorsed 6 candidates but will endorse upward of 50 by the end of the election cycle. The Council helps spread the candidate's message outside of thier district or state to garner support for the candidate nation-wide. This type of support can help propel the candidate to becoming elected and thus, help change U.S. policy in the war in Iraq. Council for a Livable World was founded in 1962 by eminent nuclear physicist Leo Szilard and other scientists who worked in the pioneer days of atomic weapons. The goal of these men and women, who knew firsthand the nature of nuclear weapons, was to warn the public and Congress of the threat of nuclear war and lead the way to rational arms control and nuclear disarmament.
The mission of the Council has remained simple and pragmatic. The Council provides Senators and Members of Congress with sophisticated technical and scientific information that helps them make intelligent decisions about weapons of mass destruction and supports candidates in congressional elections who will adops sensible national security policies.

Elect Progressive Leaders

Council for a Livable World has been the largest fundraiser of arms-control candidates for Congress. The Council searches for progessive candidates who advocate for elimination of nuclear weapons, and end to the war in Iraq and who overall support diplomacy, cooperation. These candidates are the same candidates who will support laws to fight global warming, increase foreign aid, etc. Sometimes we live in districts where our representatives ARE progressives -- the Council will identify candidates that need help from outside their district or state -- and that's where WE can come in! The Council takes no money from the top, it all goes directly to the candidate. The added bonus: when the Council sends the check, the candidate knows that the money is coming from people who gave it becuase of thier positions on nuclear arms, Iraq and other security issues.
