Imagine an epidemic affecting millions across the country. Imagine nearly one in two young people, under the age of 25, infected. Millions suffering long-term consequences caused by secondary infections and illnesses. Billions spent to directly test and treat those affected, not to mention the indirect costs. Surely if this epidemic were to strike, you’d see headlines like the one above splashed across newspapers and announced across all media outlets. Wouldn’t you? You don't have to imagine the epidemic. It is indeed affecting millions, young and old, across the country right now--the epidemic of sexually transmitted infections. You can raise awareness about this epidemic. April is STD Awareness Month, an opportune time for you to write a letter to the editor of your local paper to raise awareness about STDs and the need for testing. ASHA has a smaple letter you can use at our website: http://www.ashastd.org/STDAwarenessMonthletter.cfm. You can make a change. Raise awareness during STD Awareness Month!
