Mission
Neighborhood Centers Inc. brings resources, education and connection to more than 236,000 people throughout Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast area each year.
Our 59 service locations offer comprehensive community-based programs for people at every stage of life - from infants to seniors. We work with residents of underserved communities to help them discover the strengths and skills necessary to become productive, prosperous and self-sufficient.
Programs
Neighborhood Centers Inc. offers programs through three divisions.
Community Based Initiatives builds upon the unique strengths of neighborhoods and their residents. Our programs serve populations of all ages and include neighborhood centers, senior centers, youth programs, tax centers, a credit union, disaster relief, immigration and citizenship assistance and much more.
Choices in Education provides opportunities to help nurture children from birth to age 10 and start them on a path toward academic and career success. Programs include Early Childhood Development, Head Start, Early Head Start and Charter schools.
Public Sector Solutions specializes in designing and implementing human services programs. We build upon our traditional strength of assisting people in their own communities, within the context of their own cultures, by transferring our skills and experience to other organizations. This helps them better serve their customers, constituents, and partners, while building organizational capacity.
History
In 1907, an East End school teacher named Sybil Campbell enlisted the help of Alice Graham Baker to address an immediate need for an affordable nursery and kindergarten.
Along with the Second Ward Women's Club, Mrs. Baker founded the Houston Settlement Association and served as the organization's first president. The Association's stated purpose was to extend "educational, industrial, social and friendly aid to all those within reach."
Since our days as the Houston Settlement Association, Neighborhood Centers Inc. has had many names; however, no changes have occurred in our purpose, character, exempt status or method.
Neighborhood Centers Inc. is a United Way agency.
